I was going to register for the Block Island Sprint Tri on August 1st and then saw that there is also a Sprint Tri in Newport August 2nd.  Any suggestions regarding which to choose?

I don't know anything about the Block Island one but the Newport Sprint is on the Naval Base.  Well run, you can get info in the Newport Naval Station Tri thread in the RI group.

Thanks. I think I am leaning toward the Newport one. Do you know what the distances are this year. I have found some conflicting information -- 1/3 mile swim, 10 mile bike and 3 mile run seems to be most reliable info. Any reason they shortened it from last year and do you know what registration is capped at/when it closes? Thanks!

Sounds about right for the bike.  They shortened the ride due to the shift of the swim from the EOD Basin to on base.  It won't be two loops this year, just one.  The swim/bike/run transitions should all happen across the street from the bowling alley in a grassy lot.  This will allow them to get stuff set up early and not have the porta potty issues this year.

Sounds like fun, I was stationed there in the late 80's. I always liked the base.
