So yesterday I was able to finish my first outdoor triathlon ( I did an indoor over the winter, but I dont count that). So i have been training for an olympic distance later in the summer and the event I did yesterday was only a sprint. While I feel the bike and run went pretty well, other than rubbery legs on the run, the concern I did have was the swim. I have been really upping my distances and while in the pool I can consistantly do the 1 mile olympic and I have been training in Lake Michigan once a week and I have consistanly fnished that mile as well. I am not sure if I came out too fast in the swim or since the lanes were so crowded (outdoor 50m swimming pool) and I had to sight the whole time, or if it was the water in my googles or the sun in my eyes, but I was way more winded in the swim than I anticipated. I was never able to get into a groove because it was so crowded, but that worried me a little because if I was that hypoxic in a sprint distance how will I do in the olympic? My hopes are that in the olympic people will spread out more once the initial rush is over. I also think I need to tell myself that for now I should be focusing on finishing the events rather than trying to win it. I may have went into the swim yesterday a little too excited to start sprinting. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Sounds like you had a great race.

It was probably nothing more than a few nerves and probably pushing the pace a little too fast without proper warm up.  Try to warm up and get your hr going a little before your swim.

You will be fine and good luck.

Hey Jeff.....I think you did the same one I did yesterday (Schaumburg, IL?).  I was also a little surprised at how lanes were getting clogged up in the early waves, but realized that some people probably just seeded themselves incorrectly.  When you see 6-7 people bunched up at the walls that's a problem.  I was grateful that when I caught up to some people they were nice enough to let me pass them at the wall; good sportsmanship!

I think you'll be fine.  It sounds like you got the distance work done for the Oly so you should be good to go.

Thank you. I did feel that i wasnt really able to warm up as much as I would have liked before hand. I have about 6 weeks before the international distance so I am going to put a lot of attention on my run and swim for now. If nothing else this was a great opportunity to get some of the kinks out and see where I felt strong and where I needed work.

Yep that was the one! Overall I thought it was a nice course. The streets were pretty much entirely clear the whole bike and run. The swim was the only tricky part. next year I want to seed way in the front or even way in the back to let it slow down.
