Subject: Where can I find some flat runs here?
So I'm training for the Chicago Marathon. The fact that the highest point of the race is 24 ft above sea level just totally makes my day. Plus my altitude advantage....how could I go wrong?

I'm just wondering where I can find some flat run courses in the South Denver area...say about 13-15 miles long. I don't mind training on hills, but I read somewhere that I should probably at least experience the repetitive boringness (and subsequent monotony of muscle use) of an all flat run sometime before October.

I'd really rather not drive too far out (I live right next to cherry creek reservoir), but I will if I have to. The other option I could come up with was running on a high school track, but I think the boringness of running the same .25 mile loop 50 times might kill me. What do you guys do for flat runs?

Or would you say that training on a flat course really isn't that important?

I have a pretty flat 13 mile course just west Denver. I start at the W26th and Kipling, there is plenty of parking there at crown hill park. From there I run North on Kipling to the clear creek trail which is around W 48th.  From there East on the clear Creek Trail all the way to Tennyson St ( make sure you drive to the intersection of Tennyson and CC trail so you know where to get off the trail). From there south on Tennyson till you reach W 26th again, Run West on 26th until you reach your car. There is only one hill to climb and that is when you first get onto to Tennyson

Yea, Highline Canal, you can pick it up all over the south area from Highlands Ranch through Littleton, Centennial and to wherever it ends.
I pick it up a lot at County Line, just west of Broadway  (there's a trailhead and parking lot here).  You can run north (east) forever and it's all gravel/cinder fine type trails.  I also like to take it south (west).  It links up with the C-470 bike trail in this direction and is asphalt for a few miles until it crosses under C470.  Be sure to jump off the asphalt trail here, cross the frontage road to the south, and hop on the Highline Canal trail that runs through the HR Golf Club.  It then crosses Santa Fe and you can take it another 2-3 miles.  From the trailhead to Santa Fe is about 4.25 miles.  Then you get another 2 or so after Santa Fe.

Anyway, the Highline is relatively flat and fairly well shaded.  Great for long runs!
