I've been training pretty religiously for my first HIM, which will be August 1st (Barb's race/Vineman course in Sonoma County, CA) and just wanted to get some feedback on suggestions for nutrition this last week, mental/emotional management, and any other physical training stuff. I'm getting my ART done on Tuesday, massage on Wed. and have a few lighter workouts, with speed factors set up by my training plan (a coach). I was wondering if I should add in some speed work for runs even if it's not planned, since my runs have gotten progressively slower, esp on the longer ones. Thanks in advance.

I'm racing Barbs on Saturday also - I did that course as the 70.3 last year and it's lovely.

If you've trained religiously to your plan up to this point, I don't see a reason to deviate and add additional speedwork now, in a week that is more about resting your body up for Saturday than anything else.

What specifically were you looking for in terms of suggestions? What nutrition/hydration strategy have you used in training? Should probably stick to what has worked for you up to this point.

Don't add in any additional speedwork. Your runs probably have gotten slower because of cumulative fatigue. Taper will take care of that. Good luck!!

I will tell you to go easy on the swim and bike. If you train with a HR monitor do not exceed your long ride HR. It is easy to get caught up in the race part. This will most likely hurt your ability to run the whole 13.1. Ask me how I know this. You need to be very patient as it is a long race.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I'm just wondering if there's anything else I can do to prepare. I'm not adding any additional workouts, other than a coach-approved easy swim tomorrow if I feel like it. I'm starting to pack all the stuff and get everything ready to leave in 2 days! I know many of you have been through this before and I think the mental management and emotional management is the tough part for me right now. I think once I'm in it and the horn or gun or whatever goes off, I'll settle in.  I need to not lend so much importance to the race either -- I mean, I'm doing this for fun. But, my stomach keeps doing flip flops and I've been nauseous off and on today. Pre-race jitters, no doubt.

Off to pack some more.
