Subject: Casual Drafting
So there I was this morning...out to do a timing run for an upcoming event...cranking away attacking a hill and I passed this guy.  Next thing I know he is right on my wheel drafting....

Come on....I mean if I'm out in a pack its one thing but to draft off a stranger maybe its just me...but one would expect a bit different.

Finally had to turn to the guy and tell him to get off my wheel and he got the point.

Anybody out there draft off strangers, especially without asking or at least starting a conversation?

I've never encountered a rider going my direction and similar to my pace yet, but I imagine I would be a little weirded out by someone riding my wheel without saying anything. If I do ever see someone riding a similar pace and I'm feeling social my plan is to ride up next to them and ask if they would mind riding together for a bit. I don't really know many cyclists around here so it would be cool to meet someone. But I would never just hop on someone's wheel without saying anything...

I've had this happen a couple of times. I just politely let them know that I am not an experienced group rider and that hanging off of my back wheel is not a safe place to be.  They got the point and either backed off or rode with me for a while.

If someone really needs a draft, a couple of bike lengths back is still effective but safe.

Thanks everyone. As a newbie...I feel better in how I reacted and what expectations are out there.

If I wasn't trying to do something very specific that morning I might have enjoyed the experience...but.....my events right now are non-drafting events.

But I did pull nearly 7 miles at 22 minutes 400+ elevation change.

I feel like this happens a lot, and I personally don't mine (unless the person is like 2 inches off my tire).
