Subject: Swimming - Breathing technique??
New to swimming I have by my own admission improved alot since I began in April.
Reading through, threads, blogs I understand that to swim well you have to be at ease in the water, and especially with your breathing as if it was natural to you. Not there yet!! My question is; do you/should you exhale through your nose, mouth, both? Is it just individual preference...
At the moment I tend to snort out my nose just before I rotate left to inhale back in! Works for me but obviously I am holding my breath for a short while and I think that is a no-no! Just after some helpful advice...

I breathe out through my nose.  It's a slow exhale, kind of like humming - unless of course I'm doing a hard workout in which case I am exhaling harder because I will be breathing more often.  Breathing out through your nose keeps water from getting in.  If you hold your breath and "snort" it out just before rotating to breathe, you will tire yourself out more - it's like gasping for air rather than just relaxing and breathing.

I swim with my mouth open... like a catfish. HA!

I exhale through my mouth and inhale through it. I try to close it when I'm in open water... but it doesn't really happen.

Exhale while your face is in the water and inhale when it's out.

When you turn your head to the side to breathe, also tip your chin back towards your shoulder. It doesn't need to touch the shoulder, but should go slightly back in that direction.

Good luck!

PS- If you can get video of you swimming, people can give you some specific pointers and you can see what you are doing right and wrong.
