Sommer Sports

Sunny
Total Time = 2h 39m 55s
Overall Rank = 46/248
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 6/21
Pre-race routine:

Got up around 0430 and had to drive to Lousiville, about an hour away. other than the hour, this wasn't too bad. I would probably not do it this way again. On the drive over, I had oatmeal and a little fruit and some water. I realized once I got there, the problem with driving so far to the race was that I was also very far from a comfortable bathroom. I mean, come on, let's face it, the port o lets at the race are sub-standard!
Event warmup:

Again, not much.
Swim
  • 34m 25s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

In the transition area I heard the announcer say this was a wetsuit-legal race, and I reflexively grabbed mine, but what I should have done was go check to see what the water felt like. I have a hard time believing this was wetsuit legal. The water was like a bathtub!! It was so hot. All I could think about during the swim was getting out and being able to cool off on the bike. I think this was a contributing factor to my poor performance during the swim. I also think this swim might have been a long 1500m, maybe closer to 2000m. If I remember correctly, my swim on the half ironman (2000m) was about the exact same time...for 500m more!!! Anyway, I take the results of this swim with a grain of salt.
What would you do differently?:

Personally check the water temperature, not blindly trusting the announcer for water temperature.
Transition 1
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

I think this was one of my better transitions. I would still like it to be faster, but I'm not yet sure how to make this happen right now.
Bike
  • 1h 14m 11s
  • 25 miles
  • 20.22 mile/hr
Comments:

Good ride. Only passed by about 3 people, and I must have passed at least 20-30. I can really see the results in my bike training, but I am still finding myself not very high in the overall ranking on the bike segment. Frustrating, but maybe this will change throughout next season.
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Run
  • 47m 35s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Pased by 1 person, and passed around 10. I expect not to have many more gains in running until I start to focus more diligently on this discipline. I should just try not to get frustrated by this fact in the meantime.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

stopped running. I took a nap under one of the tents, and was awakened 40minutes later by several people standing over me asking if I was ok. Apparently they thought I wasn't breathing very much and I don't know what they were thinking, but I felt like they were getting ready to start CPR or something. Good thing I was easy to wake.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my slowness.

Hey John,
Nice race! Is KY agreeing with your training/non-training activities? Your tri-disciples are busy training for another event, late August mayhap. Anant and I have decided that training for better performances is a waste of time, we just want to look good doing it, so we're throwing all our efforts into weight training to get ripped! Naah, just kiddin', but we did decide it might give us an edge to be stronger (especially the core) and have more effective training.

Good race. Do you plan on doing it this year? I'm thinking about it.
