Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin
United States
Lakeview Recplex
76F / 24C
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 40m 4s
Overall Rank = 176/470
Age Group = 40-44M
Age Group Rank = 30/61
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4am, walked the dog. Enroute, had coffee, bagel and cream cheese and water. Got to the race site, got the van stuck in the mud and needed help getting out (2 volunteers helped out). Took the shuttle to the race site and started setting up.
Event warmup:

No real warmup to speak of. Some light stretching.
Swim
  • 29m 38s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Pretty comfortable swim. No problems or difficulties.
What would you do differently?:

Going to start working on faster swims. I have been "conserving" on the swim my first few tri's to save some for the bike and run, but I think I can work on going faster.
Transition 1
  • 03m 48s
Comments:

T-1 times a little slow still. Had trouble dropping things today. I have to wear glasses and the strap came off twice while I was putting them on.
What would you do differently?:

Just need more practice.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 22s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.52 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought I had a better bike ride as far as speed and rank goes. But, I am pretty happy because I am slowing getting faster. I felt really good off the bike and did not feel like I had expended too much energy on the bike prior to the run.
What would you do differently?:

Aerobars!
Transition 2
  • 03m 5s
Comments:

I really did not think that I was this slow in T-2. It was comfortable though. I took my time and made sure that I took an extra drink of water before I left because I wasn't sure where the first water station was.
What would you do differently?:

I ended up with an extra gel and I should have taken it at the start of the run.
Run
  • 47m 13s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Finally, a decent run off the bike. I have been working at starting off faster and slowing into the race pace instead of starting off slower and speeding up to race pace and it seems to work for me. I am very happy with this run.
What would you do differently?:

I think I could have pushed more speed out of the run but I didnt want to overdo it too early and run out of gas later in the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a lot of fluids but wasn't that hungry (which is very unusual for me after a race). First off , watched CindyK finish her race (YEAH Cindy! - she had a great race!!) Then tried to find HICCUP at the coffee house but did not see her and watched BMAX finish her first Oly race (she had a great race too!). We hung out for a while through most of the awards ceremony and then packed up the gear and headed back to the van.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just experience. I am slowly learning how much to push on each event.

Event comments:

I really like this race. It is a great confidence builder. I have been working really hard on making some improvements in my training and racing and feel like this event allowed me push myself and actually see some results from it. This is a PB time for me (about 9 minutes faster than my previous best). I'll be back to do this race next year.

YOU ROCK, BAAAYBEEE! You had a great race and it was a really fun day to race together.

I have to go to the tri store tomorrow.  If you don't suck up and pick some bars out I'm doing it for you

And shouldn't you be working ?

Mark, is your wife giving you a hard time? Great race yesterday. I would love to get out and do some runs with you two if you'd be willing to slow down a little while I try to pick up my pace.
Like I told you both already, thanks again for all the inspiration and encouragement. A great way to end the tri season for me!

Great race Mark!  Nice run at the end--wow!  Isn't it funny how you think--"geez, that transition went really fast--probably a minute!"  And then you see!  Funny
I'd love to schedule more practice training with you guys too!  And I'm with BMax--I'd love to run, but you would need to go slower--Superman
