Sunny
Total Time = 17m 50s
Overall Rank = 3/
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 1/
Pre-race routine:

Nothing special. Up at 7:20, took my Endurox Excel, 200mg caffeine, multi vitamin, and ate a banana before hitting the road. Registered and did my warmup.
Event warmup:

About 10min of jogging and a few striders just before the start.
Run
  • 17m 50s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 05m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Cut 23sec off my 5k PR from early this season. I felt decent overall. There weren't a whole lot of people running this race but there were 3 others who went out with me in the lead. We hit the first mile as a pack and by mile 2 one guy and one girl (more on her later) started pulling away and I stuck with another young guy (probably 16-18yo). With about 800m to go I accelerated and pulled away from the kid and finished ~40sec off the winner. The girl who took 2nd overall is a little 14yo (that's not a typo) who typically smokes all the other ladies at the local road races. I think she ran 17:30!
What would you do differently?:

Well, I just had my first HIM 6 days ago and although I'm not sore anymore I probably need more time for complete recovery. Also, my training for the last 3-4 months has been focused on the HIM so 5k isn't the best distance for me to be running right now.
Post race
Warm down:

The usual...tried my best to drag myself out of the finish lane and went for water. A little crawling turned into a weak walk and eventually I was upright and doing okay.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm not recovered from my HIM nad I haven't trained for such a short race.

Event comments:

This is a small local race to support the Holiday House (Benefiting mentally disabled children in Virginia). They had the basics covered as far as organization and everything seemed to work well...although I heard that the 1 mile race/walk they had earlier got off course for some reason. For such a small race they had a lot of prizes...$25, $20, and $15 cift certificates to one of the local running shops for the top 3 overall (M & F) and top 3 in every age group (M & F).

Course: This was basically the first 5k of the Elizabeth River 10k that I ran back in the early summer. It's a flat cousre through downtown Portsmouth. The final mile measure is a little suspect because I felt like I was running steady and definitely picked it up the last 800m so seeing that my mile #3 split was 20seconds slower than mile #2 makes me think that the course might be slightly long.
