Welcome to BT Amana.

I'm not the greatest swimmer in the world and can only offer what's worked for me.

I used to get completely exhausted swimming, which is odd since my aerobic fitness is above average.  What I learned was that I, like most new swimmers, started too fast and kept trying to go faster, rather than forcinging yourself to slow down and find a rhythm.  Once I was able to slow down it seemed like I could go forever.

Just my 2cents.

Welcome to the site. I agree, slow down and just take your time. Endurance and speed will come to you as you continue to swim.

Welcome.... Let me ask you this question: when you’re in the water do you feel like you’re a piranha on crack? That is what I was told that I looked like 6 months ago when I first started swimming… my arms were turning over so quick in the water that I was running out of steam and my breathing was just out of control.

From a beginner swimmer my thoughts:

  • Spend time in the water even if that’s just using the kickboard
  • Slow down
  • Join a masters swim (masters = adult) that have multiple levels of swimmers and its usually cheap.
  • Push yourself (for about a week the furthest I could swim was 200 yards so I decided that I would make myself swim 210 yards the next time (baby steps) then no matter how bad my body said STOP STOP I was going to push through the pain I finally surpassed the 200 mark easily and now feel that I could swim miles)

I just noticed your post. Where do you swim? I am in CO as well.
Have you lived here long? One thing that you may not think about is the altitude here. I knew it affected my running, but have definately noticed it in my swimming as well.
One thing that helps is to stretch out your strokes and make sure you are getting all of the phases of your underwater stroke in. Be efficient with you strokes under water, getting in a full finish on your stroke. It's about what happens under the water with your hands and arms, not just how fast you get them back around.
Think about swimming down hill when you get tired (I know that this sounds funny, but it can work) and don't forget to KICK. When your arms get tired concentrate on your legs for a bit.

I've got a tri in weeks in CA, but if you want to swim some time after that, I'd be happy to show you some drills and take a look at your swim. I've been swimming competetively since age 5 and also have some coaching experience.

you can send me an email or just post here again if you want to do some off season training.
