Precipitation
Total Time = 6h 32m 8s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 280/367
Pre-race routine:

Euphoric/forgetful barely choked down a harvest power bar and a starbucks coffee.
Event warmup:

too cold, shivered a warm up and stretched
Swim
  • 36m 56s
  • 2000 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim, my strong discipline. It was over fast. I loved the last 300 to 400 yards with a current pulling us into transition. I was surprised at how congested the entire swim was. Either I can't swim straight or a lot of other people can't. The coldest water I have ever swam in. Great Experience.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster, push harder.
Transition 1
  • 06m 46s
Comments:

I was freezing. I had some advice from a coach that was a quote from John Wooden. Be quick but don't hurry. I was not to concerned with my speed through this transition. Next race I will speed it up.
What would you do differently?:

calm down more, stay relaxed
Bike
  • 3h 23m 46s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.49 mile/hr
Comments:

My first half-ironman and only the second time i had ridden 56 miles. I was satisfied with my time. The wind came up towards the end making the last 8-10 miles almost unbearable. I need to find a bigger bladder. I stopped to urinate twice!!!
What would you do differently?:

Bring warmer gear that can be shedded. Pay closer attention to drafting policy. Got caught drafting before I realized that I was. 4 minute penalty. I hope I did not slow that guy down for too long.
Transition 2
  • 08m 48s
Comments:

4 minute time-out, had to pee, but they said I had to wait to do it on my own time. My bad
What would you do differently?:

Get my legs better prepared for the running muscles while on bike (spin more)
Run
  • 2h 15m 53s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

First 2 miles felt like 10, finally settled into a slow pace. 1st loop was harder than 2nd. On the strand portion of the run many of the spectators turn this day into a party day. I really wanted to stop running and have a beer and sit in a lwan chair. For some reason or other the song "Eye of the tiger" is still playing in my head.
What would you do differently?:

I walked too much through the aid stations, and drank too much water.
Post race
Warm down:

Hobbled to the pizza and cookies. a little stretching and a long walk to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of experience in Iron distance. My goal time was 6:30 so I did really well for my first race. I now know that I can push a little harder.

Course: Course was nice the first 20-30 miles felt comfortable, the hills arrived and that changed everything. I kept my heart rate very low for the bike. I stayed in the high 140's If I krept up I would slow down. The run was going to be a big surprise and I wanted to finish the bike with plenty of energy. The marines were great, very encouraging
