Swim
Comments: 180 registered, 146 finishers, all started at once. hard to site the first bouy through the surf. lot's of contact with other swimmers. the right lens of my googles immediately filled with water. took several attempts at adjusting the mandatory swim cap and the googles to keep the water out. once i got around the first bouy, the swim to the second was parallel to the beach . only one or two cresting waves caught me by surprise, but i never did swallow any water. only after rounding bouy 2 back to the beach was i able to really focus on arm switch, FQS, and good body rotation. not a bad swim, but still my worst event. What would you do differently?: Nothing, I've been doing the TI drills on/off for six months, and have come to accept that i'm not going to see much more improvement without hands on pro coaching....... and i'm only in this for the fun of it. so, as long as i can complete the distance, stay comfortable in the ocean, i'm okay with it. Transition 1
Comments: pouring rain on the swim exit. towels, shoes, everything already soaked, so i just set on the ground, rinsed off the sand/mud from knees down, put my socks and bike shoes on. drank some poweraid, cleaned my glasses and jogged my way out of the transition. it was paved and very wet.... so with the shoe cleats, i took my time. What would you do differently?: not much considering the pouring rain............ Bike
Comments: my lower back started hurting about 20" into the ride.... but was manageable by getting up off the aero bars for a minute or two at a time until finishing. What would you do differently?: If i want to improve the bike time, only lot's of time in the saddle will help.... which i don't have without neglecting my family time.... so, it just isn't worth the tradeoff for me. i'm comfortable with my bike time. Transition 2
Comments: didn't ride with feet on top of shoes, didn't jump off moving bike. i just rode up the the timing mount with shoes unclipped and dismounted...slowly straightened out streched my lwr back. walked my bike back to the rack, still pouring rain, wet pavement, slick shoe cleats. What would you do differently?: nothing considering the conditions Run
Comments: shoes and socks soaked before even starting the run...so, add another lb or so equivalent ankle weight to each foot. by now, we were getting about 2" rain in the hour, so lot's of running / standing water in the streets up to several inches in some places. no problem not heating up during the run. What would you do differently?: nothing. anything better than an 8" mile is okay with me. Post race
Warm down: NONE, pouring rain, almost cold from being rain soaked for the past 2 hours. got my T-shirt and went home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Someone put an ocean swim in this event!! and the rain. Event comments: Rainy / Wet / Miserable race conditions....... but overall, glad the Good Lord gave me two arms and legs and the ability to even participate / train for each of these events, and the opportunity to live in Hawaii for a few years enjoying His creation!!
