Subject: Incredibly stupid good deed
I slept a little late this morning so just happened to be in a position to do an incredibly stupid good deed. As I approach the 2nd busiest intersection in Madison, Hwy 72 & Wal-Triana, I see a car nose end in the ditch. The ditch was deep and it was clear he was not coming out. No one was stopping to help this guy. I was running late and there was traffic everywhere but I pulled over. I tried to figure out if I should pull him out or if I should just wait for a cop to stop and block traffic. I got out and asked him what happened. He said he was on his way to work and tried to turn into McDonalds but his window on this passenger side was all iced over and he turned too soon. Doh! I handed him a tow rope and told him to tie it to his frame. I got in my truck and pulled thru the McDonald’s parking lot and pulled up behind him. Traffic was everywhere and was not stopping but I stopped almost in the middle of this intersection. I got out and tied the tow rope to a tow hook on the front of the Raptor. I then realized I was the center of attention in this intersection and I was wearing bright blue swim jammers which look like nylon underwear to non-swimmers! I had on a dirty white tee shirt that I’d been working on the Jeep with the previous night and I had tennis shoes on with no socks. On top of that I had top-o-the-morning bed hair! I must have looked a sight! I chuckled at the thought and got back in my truck. I was pulling him at an angle and for a moment I thought I might roll his car over on its side but it came out of the ditch. I got out and retrieved the tow rope and headed on to the pool. Thinking back on it, it was probably stupid to risk getting my new Raptor hit in that busy intersection. But the young black man I helped was very thankful and looked like he could ill afford the cost of a tow truck.

Good of you to help.

I drive a 3/4 ton diesel truck and always have a tow strap with me so situations have come up where I have had the chance to help. Always makes me a bit nervous though. The liability of hooking on to a stranger's car and tugging it around is it a bit scary. I always make the owner of the car attach the strap to their own car, I don't want to be blamed for ripping something off the car when I yank them out. Usually works fine but I felt really bad about the last time.

Some lady got her minivan stuck way off the road in 4-5 inches of snow, it was 5:00am (on my way to the gym). I offered to help, her husband shows up and I offer to pull them out. I tell him to hook the strap on his van while I hook to my truck. He says it is all good to go so I go to pull them out and the strap comes right off the van, I thought it had just fallen off. Turns out he just reached the hook up under the van and hooked to whatever was handy. Not sure what hose got ripped off but the van was leaking what looked like transmission fluid, he must have hooked to the tranny cooler or something. I then explained to him the concept of the tow hook on the front of his van and had him try again. Got him out, but who knows what damage was done.

And the moral is, McDonald's is bad for your health.

LOL

Or someone will claim I was in the Wal-mart parking lot and I'll make the next edition of candid Walmart shots.
