Member  136  |  Subject: Open Water Swimming Seattle AreaI'm looking for a good location for a trial OW swim before my race in a few weeks. I read the thread before about Lake Sammamish and saw the recommendation for Pine and Beaver Lakes. I take it those aren't too full of plants? There is nothing I want to avoid MORE than swimming over plants! I decided to start a new thread to see if there are alternative options for our specific needs- My husband will paddle along beside me and we keep our kayak at Sail Sand Point. It's a bit of a hike to get over to Pine Lake from there. Has anyone swam at Warren G. Magnuson Park? I'm a little more concerned that is purely for the purpose of recreating and not swimming distance. Another friend recommended Juanita Bay to me. Any thoughts or suggestions? 30 minutes is probably the high end of what we would be willing to drive and the closer to Sail Sand the better. |

With a kayak escort, I wouldn't worry too much about traffic, though if weeds are a concern then the issue is where you come in/out of the water. Seward Park, by the steps, would be a good choice. Never seen weeds there, and I've done a few races out of that. But if you go over just a little ways to the sandy area, then there are weeds not far out. Once you're at anything deeper than 10 feet or so, though, even if there are weeds they're well out of reach. But... Gotta ask: why skeeves you out about the weeds? Swimming through them really isn't a huge deal, just be smooth and lift your arm out of the water from the elbow. I've been through some pretty thick stuff... They're not predatory. |

Member 136 | Subject: RE: Open Water Swimming Seattle Area Yes, Sail Sand is right in the area of Sand Point/Magnuson Park. They run a sailboat operation with courses and stuff. I think using the word "skeeves" is the perfect description for my problem with weeds. I know there's nothing wrong with them but they just give me the willys. It's so unsettling to feel them tickling you and then your mind starts to wander and it's distracting and gross!  I should just do it a few times and get over it... but if it's avoidable, why not pursue that route! Thanks for the suggestions, I was worried I wouldn't hear from anyone until after the weekend had passed! |

The next one is in July. Ha! My race is there tomorrow. But I'm doing Chelanman next month too. Kent is just too far from Everett to Seattle and back again for a normal day swim. |
