Subject: Unhappy? What to do about it...

Ok, so I'm completely bored and frustrated with my job. Shocker right? I bet none of you saw that one coming. Anyway, I'm going to follow runnergirl and hopefully do something about it (I'm trying to talk her into moving to the same place, but thats for another day).

So has anyone else been in a situation with nothing to lose, everything to gain? And what did you do? For instance, I really don't see whats stopping me from moving to some island in the Caribbean and living the good 'ol island life (with Welshy and Kona of course). However, I think I'm a little more goal oriented than that....ok, I'm blabbering.

Anyone else just pick up and move or do something that others would consider drastic but you thought nothing of it?

I'm taking suggestions.

Thanks, that made me laugh and I needed that! However, I'd open a Freebirds. Maybe a Freebirds on an island.

Anyone have an extra trust fund lying around? I would much rather fill my days training, racing, skydiving, travelling, and being an eternal student.

I am soo hating my job today.  In fact I had to vent to a coworker about it earlier.  I find my job extrememly boring.  I am a people person (and people LOVe talking to me, yet I look at data and review paper all day.  I really want to go back to school for exercise health/physiology or something like that.  Or maybe go to massage therapy school?  Or get certified to become a personal trainer, spin instructor, or aerbocis instructor, nutritionist?  I need to have a career that's within my interests.  I would love to open up a speciality tri or running store in Augusta, however, I don't think there's a huge market for it.  I would like to move, by I just realized something.  If I moved and worked for another company, it would be the same boring work- just with different people and in a new place.  That would get old too.  So...I need to get off my butt anddo something different and stop dreaming about it!   I feel ya Tricomet!

I'm leaving for Australia on October 6th. I have a well paying job auditing, but 99% of the time, I'd rather someone run over my foot than come into work. I'm bored out of my mind, and when I DO get some work, it's horrible. So I say screw it.

I'm staying in Australia for 7 months, then coming back and not doing accounting. I'm going back to school to get a degree in nutritional sciences. I just got certified as a personal trainer, and am going to do that to make money while I'm in school. My friends all think I'm an idiot, but I think this is the only way I'm going to stay sane.

Plus - it'll be summer there (winter here), so that means 7 more months of triathlons!

I say do it. F it all. You're young, you have the rest of your life to work...

The main piece of advice I would give about the job situation is to truly step back and evaluate it.  By that I mean, is there a future with the company?  Do they promote from within?  Do you like the people you work with?  Is there a role/position in the company you could see yourself in?  Are you in that "pay your dues" mode that most everyone hates but is truly beneficial in the long run?  I was very frustrated with my company at one point and jumped ship.  2 years later I came back to my original company.  If I would have stayed patient, things would have worked out but I was too far in the forrest to see the trees.  The good thing is that I realized the grass is not always greener elsewhere.

Now that being said, if you don't see a future long term with the company, there really isn't anything to lose.  Just make sure you think through the financial side of a move.  Moving without a job or going into debt for a move can be a recipe for bad decision making if you aren't careful.  Good luck!  And if you're good with numbers (not accounting) then I could use someone in Orlando :-)

Oh my gosh- you have inspired me to do something different!  It's hard because I work for a great company, have excellent benefits, get bonuses, get 25 days a year for vacation- having all that makes me feel very comfrotable and stable, yet I'm not happy.  There's a massage therapy school that I go to in evenings.  What I'd like to do is get certified as a personal trainer, open a mini-gym that also has a spa.  I could train clients, give them a post workout massage, and offer them a smoothie or protein shake.  Sounds pretty good huh?

I think I have decided on a program, just need to get the ball rolling. I'm probably going to take a similar route as you without the side trip to Austrailia.

That's pretty similar to what I want to end up doing. I want a gym, and I really want to work with clients on nutrition. I also want to work with schools to clean up cafeteria menus to get kids used to eating more nutritiously.

I have all the same things you mentioned, amazing benefits, bonuses (they gave us cash bonuses plus new iPods for Christmas!), 25 days vacation per year, etc. But I come home every night and am pissed beyond belief, or have a headache. I don't think I've really smiled at work in about 6 months (I'm good at faking them!). All this has shown me that money doesn't mean squat. I'm working for 4 months in Aus, and I'll probably work at a gym, wait tables, work in a grocery store, whatever. But you know what I'm not going to do? Stress about my freakin job.

My job now is perfect for the person that needs money to be happy, and unfortunately, that's not me. I need a good reason to get out of bed in the morning...

No, there is no future with this company. I have no family or commitments here in Atlanta other than friends. The people who I work with are old, fat and think I'm crazy. I am not in a 'pay your dues' position. My position can't go anywhere, the money is enough to support myself and thats it, and decent raises won't happen. The only good thing here is the hours, but I've lost that due to increased workload and I'm pumping out 10-12 hour days for shit.

I'm not stupid enough to move without a job unless I move to a city with family and they would support me until I found one (that is an option, but not something I want to do). So, onward with the job search in Austin where I will probably go to school. (OldAg don't shoot me. I'm sorry, I'm not happy about it, but the program I want isn't offered at every school)

No, I'm going to quit, (it was understood when I was hired I'm too talented/educated for this job and it was a starting off point for experience) its a matter of when. Last week I was saying "1 year, after Lake Placid, then I'm outta here" Tuesday it was "ok, maybe sooner"..today "I'm getting the f*@# outta here as soon as I can". So, I just need to make some calls and see if I can use some connections.

There is an International school on the island and they are always Hiring teachers and coaches from the US.

Haley,
If you're that unhappy and have been for a significant amount of time, I'm glad you're making the change. I always sit back and analyze a situation to see why I am truly not happy and go from there. Sometimes the answer sucks, like last time it was truly me and not the job that was the problem. It sounds like you have done this. Going back to school is a good step if it is a means to what you want to do. It might not be a great step if you are doing it just because you don't know what else to do. I have friends with me in law school right now who did that and they hate it. Make sure you are cognizent of what will make you happy in deciding where you live (ie school program, weather, friends, family, etc) so those are met when you move. I really think you can be happy wherever you are in terms of geography in the country. What field are you looking to get into? I have friends in a lot of different fields that might be able to offer some advice.
I was working at a hospital a few years ago, making good money, and moved across the country to Connecticut to go to grad school. I made the decision in one day this summer and moved to San Francisco with the whole intention of switching law schools, etc. The good news is if you are this unhappy where you are, any improvement will be a good one. I am glad you are making the decision you are.

I think I read that your 23-24? No kids? No marriage? Well,  I vote you go find something you enjoy. Life is too short to do things that your not happy about. If your not happy about your job, change it. If you don't like where you live. Move!  If you want to bum around Kona. Do it! Your only without major responsibilties for a short time. Enjoy that time.

That is, of course, assuming you don't have student loans. If so, ignore everything I said and go pay them off. J/K Enjoy yourself.

Haley - It sounds like you could use the change. Seriously, it will keep you sane in the long run. If you really are 23 or 24, you have to. No committments, no attachments. I'm 23, and in the exact same boat as you. Embrace it as an opportunity to make some changes, and enjoy it. Whatever you decide, keep us up to date, and kick ass.

Haley,  I left a job I hated 3 and a half years ago.  I was 39 and had two teenagers at home.  The paycheck kept me there entirely too long.  Now we've been so broke for so long that we have gotten usd to it.  So when I graduate in a few months it is on to grad school.  No time like the present.  I am now 42, the oldest kid has moved out, and we are going move closer to where I want to go to school (UNH).

Do I regret any of this??  NO, ONLY THAT I DIDN'T DO IT WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE!!

Now get out there!
