Hey who's coming out to G2 in Sept? I started last year in the Try-a Tri (at least I finished) trained alot more and improved at G1 this year. Placed 116 out of 283 this season was 213 out of 280 last year. Looking forward to moving up to Sprint level soon. I just found this site.... awesome... I am 44 just started and I race and train with my 17 year old daughter and 14 year old son.

I just got into tri's about 4 month ago. I love this site, found it last week. I'm looking for an event in September, but am not familiar with the GL II. I'm 33 and I started tri after my youngest was born (7 months ago) and have totally gotten addicted. I think my husband is just as addicted. I'm doing the bluewater this weekend, just hoping to finish. I have already done 2 try-a-tris.

Sorry GII is the Guelph Lake 2, Guelph Lake hosts 2 Tri events G1 usually end of June, and G2 at the start of Sept. Good venue, I am told its one of the best events around, great turnout. Hope to see you there

Thats an excellent Idea lets see who else jumps in on the is thread and figure out how/where to connect on race day. The Tri is an individual kind of sport but I like the social aspect around it. All the Tri athletes I have met have been super nice, friendly people its a very welcoming sport. I have friend in other sports who have observed the same thing there is something about the Tri group that is much more open than others.
So who else is out there ??

Hey dad this is truely an awesome site! I can;t wait to see how many people show up on this thread. I think it will be great to see how many people we can meet at the triathlon in sept. I'm still getting used to the whole "endurance" sport thing...I am usually a sprint runner at track, but i think it will work out well.

Thanks for the web page, I took a look and am going to join the sprint length. How is the water? Should I consider a wet suit? It looks like a good event.

sorry about the previous post.. apparently I am having troubles this morning.

Ahh yes the ultimate question.. how is the water?  It can be iffy.  If you are not familiar with Guelph Lake, basically it is a man made lake and it remains very stagnant through out the summer.  Every winter they drain the lake so that in the spring time it can handle the rain and melting snow.  There is a large flock of geese which enjoy using the lake as their toilet.  Now, having said that, I swam in it last year at GLII, this year at GLI and will yet again at GLII.  The temp usually isn't too terrible, wetsuit if you wish, but I wouldn't bother unless you are doing the Olympic distance or have OW troubles and the wetsuit helps you with that.  There is a sandy beach and not very many rocks to deal with.  The run along the beach then up the grass hill on the way to the TA is a killer.  This is my fav. venu so far, very well run event, large turnout and simply a great way to spend the weekend!

I'll be there doing the Sprint.

Thanks for the info. I'm still not sure if I'm going to invest in a wet suit this year. I'm doing the bluewater tri this weekend in Lake Huron. It's an olympic length and I thought about getting one, but I've swam in the water a couple of times and it's not too bad. Having invested in a new bike this year, I'm just not sure if I can justify a wet suit too. It may have to wait till next. Any thoughts on what I should be looking/asking for? I've done some research, but still end up sounding like a complete bafoon in the store.

I agree with Elly the lakes not great but I swam last fall and in June and the water was OK. On the wetsuit thing I bought one over the winter it was a necessity I was terrible in the water but it helped me improve tremendously I took 2 min off my time and will take 2 more off this next race. Enduro Sport in TO sport sells off their rental suits post season at a decent price and they are in good shape. Most of the experts say a full sleeve suit is the way to go but if $$ are a issue I picked up a 3/4 ( no sleeves ) and am very pleased with the improvement it provided. May outgrow it one day and go full sleeve but for now it works for me. Also I agree with Elly on the venue great event great site but I have not raced elsewhere (Yet!!) but have heard the same thing said from others.
PS that run up the hill post swim to the Transition is not fun

Will BT my calf and look forward to meeting the crew, jockstraps and all! Will come out early to cheer on the early shift.
Regards to the wet suit, someone mentioned Swim Sports in Mississauga as a potential retailer. Anyone heard of it? I think I'll buckle down and get one soon.
I've heard so many good things about this GL event that I'm really looking forward to it. I've done 2 try-a-tri, but on a really local level, they were both very small and the swim was in a pool. This open water mass start has me really worried!

The open water mass start is intimidating but you just need to plan how to tackle it. How strong a swimmer are you .... place yourself accordingly, I am a weak swimmer so I tend to let the pack rush in and follow in on the tail end, no mass of people swimming over me etc. It might cost me 10 seconds but takes the stress out of the start. Now my swimming is getting stronger I am going to try and start in the middle of the pack in sept. And if you have never done open water swimming then practice sighting in the pool as you do laps. once per lap look up and ahead as you exhale this will make it easier in the race to sight once and a while so you don't swim off in the wrong direction. (been there done that)

Have no fear Kris,

The sprint normally goes off in age group waves so it's not as mass a start as it could be. Just stay relaxed and swim easy. My coach said to swim as if you are in egg shell's and your trying not to break them. If you're nervous just stay to the back of the pack. If you try and pick up on someone swimming the same speed as you, you'd be amazed how much easier it is draft.

You can also rent good wetsuits for the races. Dornellas did this last year. I tried out several wetsuits for a mere 20 bucks , found one I liked and the next year bought it. You would be amazed how much a good wetsuit can improve your performance. Just make sure they fit comfortable and you warm up with it to make sure your comfortable.

 Good luck.

Alright, time for revival.

What type of terrain are the bike/run courses for the sprint? Hilly? Flat? Rollers?

Its my 'A' race and I think I can do well.
