I have no idea how this works or how to set one up- but would anyone be interested in a 5 a day fruit and veggie challenge over the holidays (Thanksgiving to New Year's Eve)?

Last month was my first challenge and I’ve developed a slight addiction now.  I was already sad that because of recovery, etc. that I wouldn’t be able to commit to a Dec challenge.  But this looks perfect for me.  Couple of questions tho.  Do we have to be real technical on serving size?  I think my head would explode if I had to figure out the serving size for each thing.  Can we just go on our best guess?  Also, does wine count?  I would really like to join the challenge but I’d like to play by the rules of the creator – or at least understand them so I can knowingly break them. ;-Also, I think that I could come up with a spreadsheet if you want.

Ooh- I am not into measuring servings- just the general idea of getting 5 portions of fruits and veggies in.  I was thinking we could track what fruits/ veggies and even start a sub challenge on variety.

How about wine counting for no more than one a day Laughing

I like the way you think.

Yea, Kate is joining us!  So I'll still get to see you after the 5x5 challenge is over.  (Incidentally, that is kicking my butt.)

I tried to set up a ss but I think I blew it.  I'll try again later

Ok, I think that I've got a spreadsheet loaded.  Link is https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0An7ZkKfHG1L1dHlGVkN4RElUVF9IYUFqMTRSQm9hcUE#gid=0

Logon with [email protected] and password of challengeforum2.  Moonrocket, definitely tell me any changes that you want because you are the challenge owner.  I'll try to make the changes.

I probably won't be back on the site until Monday so I want to wish you all Happy Thanksgiving.  I'll log in my f&v for each day then.

I'm very interested in joining this challenge. Race/training season has finally slowed down but my food consumption has not! I don't believe in dieting or restricting food. Making sure to fuel my body properly each day is the best way to make health gains.

Thanks for starting this challenge!

Oh Catwoman, your sig line is hilarious!

Back from in-laws.  I prob had 187 different servings on TG day but I made sure that I counted my f&v.  Yesterday, I so wanted chocolate delight dessert (We call it sex in a pan) so I made sure that loaded my plate with veggies for dinner.  On the ride home, I wanted the cupcakes with cherry icing but I really didn't think I could construe that as a veggie even with the "cherry" so I got an orange instead.  So today I had pineapple, an orange, and I'm currently sipping a glass of wine.  Prepped the tomatoes and avocados for dinner to accompany the turkey so once eaten, I'll update my total for today.

Yep, yesterday I was daunted by the possibility of 3 veg for dinner but then I remembered the wine caveat.

Does everyone want to report on the ss on is it easier to just post here?  I'm also going to try to find f&V that I don't normally eat and give them a go.  I pretty much eat most f&v that I've been exposed to (except I really don't like lima beans) but I'm sure there are plenty that I'm not familiar with since I'm a Southern gal.  Like I do need to try some brussel sprouts and maybe some different squashes.  Figs are the only fruit that I can think of that I don't really eat ('cept fig newtons which are great for training).  Any suggestions on different f&V?

Yesterday was a wash unless you count salsa as a vegetable! Too bad beer doesn't count as a fruit or veggie!

Starting the challenge today. Quick question- Is it 5 fruits and 5 vegetables or a total of 5 fruits and vegetables per day?
I'm also going to start tracking my water intake again.

Moon is the owner of this but I think salsa counts, right Moon?  Also, its 5 fruits or veg or a combo.  Today I have an orange and tomato (2 fruits) and spinach, cabbage, and carrots (3 vegs).  Hey that is even before dinner which is spaghetti (I'm counting as 1 tomato, okay?) and some other veggie.  Now the way that I count is my own way because my spag has tomatoes, bell peppers, and onions but I feel like the peppers and onion are incidentally.  Yesterday I didn't count my chicken salad which had celery and apples but that is just my way of counting.  I don't think that we'll get whacked if we do it differently.

Probably not the best choices of fruits/veggies but it was what we had in the house.
Fruits- apple, grapes
veggies- picante sauce, green beans, carrots.

Didn't hit my water goals for the day.
BTW- my training blog is private. If you'd like to be added to the list let me know.

HI girls! (and boys if there are any!).  PinkSocks..We meet again!!   I saw this challenge today and I AM IN!  I've already added my name to the spreadsheet (ev3110).

I bought a Vitamix blender a few weeks ago.  It is so easy to get in 5 servings in a green smoothie.  But Ive found I dont do it everyday-so this will be the challenge for me!  My goal is to have a shake with at least 5 fruits or veggies in it OR the 5 servings fresh fruits & veggies throuout the day.   Thanks for putting this together! Ill start tomorrow!

You don't have to open up your training log.  Just go to the spreadsheet referenced above and enter the number there or post here.  I think it's cool that you have a water goal too.  I drink about 100 ounces of water during the work day and that doesn't count my bfast, dinner, and workouts.  I really think drinking lots of water helps with lots and lots of things.

Yay!!!!  Glad you are here.  You are always so fun and upbeat.  Your avatar always makes me laugh because you look like a teeny tiny little thing and then you have that bike above your head.

Also, this post brought up something.  Moonrocket, man or woman?  Many of the userids or avatar clue us in but you are a mystery.  MTA: Ok, now I know.  We have two Kates in the challenge, right?

WHERE IS EVERYBODY?  Come on and play everyone.

Barely made my 5 today.  My salad for lunch had 4 f&V but I felt like it only counted for 2.  So I doubled up on my 1 veggie tonight (DH cooked so I'm not complaining that there was only 1 veg) and then I poured myself a glass of wine for my final fruit.  Aahh, that little caveat of using wine as one really helps.

I'm here! Just ate an obscene amount of green beans. I'm visiting my parents and finally have convinced them how many veggies we can eat! I promise I'll be on more starting next week. Today I had a Chipolte veggie fajita salad with guac and about a pound of green beans. I'm going to call it five. Oh there was a glass of wine in there too!

Made me laugh.  hahaha

So I thought I was going to consume an abundance of greens today.  Not so.  But did get in 6.  I made a green smoothie: an apple, 1/2 an orange (big one!), 1.5 stalks of celery, handful of spinach & handful of Kale.  A little water, scoop of protein, & a lot of ice.  Sounds gross, looks gross, but I dig that earthy taste!!!

For dinner I only had one serving of broiled califlower (evoo, salt & Pepper, & parmesean cheese)  Soooo good.  I also made a salad but didnt touch it because I ate too many ribs...Should have had the salad first!  DOY!

I think I'm stretching it today to say that I had 5.  Do I get to count the tomatoes and lettuce from tacos as 2?  If so, I made it.  If not, I'll come up short.  Actually I know the answer.  I'll put down the tomatoes and lettuce as only 1.  I may go grap an orange to finish me up but I may just head off to bed at this ridiculous hour.

Whatever you think; that's the beauty of this challenge.  I think it could be 2 to 4 depending on the size.  I usually take salads for lunch and I have tomatoes, spinach, avocado, apple, and other stuff on there.  I usually count it as 2 or 3 but that is just me.
