Subject: Thoughts on beer...
After long rides and hard trainings, I tend to focus on hydrating myself a lot and eating well... However, I really like to enjoy a pint of good beer with friends when I go out for lunch or dinner or a couple hours after training or to cooldown a long epic ride. I realised though that "normal" people (eg. people I work with or people who do not train) don't drink beer in those occasions and tend to find it weird to have a beer with lunch, etc... On the opposite, almost everyone among my athlete friends will enjoy a good beer almost anytime (when not training or competing!). Would the thing be a "athletes' lifestyle" ? What about you people from BT ?

Thanks for sharing...

Christian.

Can't speak to a label like "athlete's lifestyle"- but I do enjoy my beer! Maybe you need to convert your co-workers-friends to YOUR kind of "athlete life style" !
I pretty much don't worry about whether my having a pint raises eyebrows or not- it is what it is- Clearly if you're succeeding in triathlon you are not a closet alcoholic- so it's THEIR issue not yours!

I love a Guiness at lunch, but I too find that some people find it offensive or innapropriate. Maybe a pint hurts these peoples' abilities to work. Who knows?

My theory is that the people I enjoy being around and those I CHOOSE to be around have a number of similarities to myself. Like you I think that many of the kind of people that have some common passion share these traits, and one instance is having a drink on occasion.

Comically I find that many of my sedintary friends aren't near as keen on hitting up a bar on Friday or having a Corona with their mexican food lunch.

Also some people will always find it unprofessional, but I thinks far more of a prudence/pop-culture sentiment than anything based off experience or scientific data. I know that i've never seen a co-worker drink a beer and proceed to be utterly useless once back on the job...

I like beer. Those are my thoughts on beer.

Actually, I workout so I can drink beer and not feel guilty.

Interesting. I find it to be quite the opposite. However, this is coming from someone who has never touched alcohol before in her life, so perhaps my point of reference is a bit skewed.

I agree. Isn't that why we workout? To enjoy a cold one or two later in the day.

let my elaborate. i have the typical suburban consumer wh*re type friends that lead sedentary lives. they will throw a party every couple/few months and get wasted, or they will hit up a club maybe once a month or every 3 weeks. there will be pretty decent alcoholic consumption at such an event.

however they won't pop open a brew during a lunch break (as seems to be a main point of topic in this thread) or in "every day" life. never at dinner when they stay home and cook or even with company watching the game.

the paradigm shift here is that the athletic folk i know will just bust out a pint when it sounds like a good idea. and by athletic i don't mean the 280lb former high school lineman. i mean my cross country friends and active adventure racing buds.

following the pattern of my sedentary friends laid out above it would seem they only drink at some sort of event or at an occasion of sorts. thats what i'm saying the difference is. of course age/location/culture will vary eveyrone's mileage.

Never drink at lunchtime but enjoy a couple of cold ones in the evening. Especially after a good workout. Great motivation!

I don't drink regularly. I don't buy beer to keep at home. Once in a while when sociallizing I'll have a few but this is pretty rare. As such, I have become a cheap date!

At the Philly Marathon at about mile 19 and 21 there was a Beer Stop on the course. The folks at a local tavern were handing out ice cold beer to whom ever wanted it. After 21 miles, that was the best tasting beverage I ever tasted and it certainly made the worst 5 miles of the race easier to deal with..
Another thing I've noticed, many major races have beer gardens at the finish. I workout so I can enjoy the good things in like a cold brew.

I like big beers and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung
Wanna pull up tough
Cuz you notice that beer was stuffed
Deep in the jeans she's wearing
I'm hooked and I can't stop staring
Oh, baby I wanna get with ya
And take your picture
My homeboys tried to warn me
But that beer you got
Make Me so horney
Ooh, rump of smooth skin
You say you wanna get in my benz
Well use me use me cuz you aint that average groupy

I've seen them dancin'
To hell with romancin'
She's Sweat, Wet, got it goin like a turbo vette

I'm tired of magazines
Saying flat beers are the thing
Take the average man and ask him that
She gotta pack much beer

So Fellas (yeah) Fellas (yeah)
Has your girlfriend got the beer (hell yeah)
Well shake it, shake it, shake it, shake it, shake that healthy beer
Baby got beer

Exact same thing for me... People I work with will go every thursday night to trash themselves but they won't have a good cold one at lunch or when they sit with friends around a table... that was quite the point...

    Cheers !

there is nothing like having a nice cold beer and a bean burrito after a hard run or a long ride. Best recovery fuel ever.

Guiness is great for the day before a run. It's like drinking a loaf of bread. How else can you carbo-load with a single glass?

The way I look at it, I need plenty of carbs for stamina and plenty of protein to build muscle. Looks like Steak and beer may be the ultimate food after all

I am a Guinness lover also... I discovered the benefit of it after a long ride with a sports buddy of mine... After the ride, he made a stop at my place and, as a joke, I offered him a beer. It was around noon but he said yes ! The only beer that I had was Guinness and we discovered that it was really satisfying having it after the ride... For those who love Guinness, you might want to give a try to one of my favorites (brewed in Montreal...) :

Plus, that one is made from oatmeal !

    Enjoy....

How did that affect you? I did a hash run last year and the beer knocked me silly. It was about 4 miles and I ran as hard as I could. When I was done I was handed a beer from the keg.
