Hey everyone.

I'm a US Marine currently stationed in west Texas. It's odd that I'm beginning my tri odessy here - it was in this same town almost 4 years ago where I decided that I wanted to become a triathlete. I made that decision while volunteering at a tri, but then I couldn't really start training do to multiple Iraq deployments (I know, many people train hard over there...I just didn't have the opportunity very often).

Regardless, I'm here now and ready to start. I have a few races on my "schedule" for this year. Starting with a duathlon in April, probably the CapTexTri (sprint) in Austin, maybe a sprint in June, and an Oly in August. I don't know if that sounds too ambitious for a first year, but I figured the best way to do something is to jump right in and hammer it. I have a running background (thank you Marine Corps) and have been cycling since last Sept. Swimming is my new adventure; I got a gym membership just to swim, and it's not as easy as I remember it...

I'm a family guy, so training time is usually tough to find, but I've been successful so far doing most of my work before they all wake up. Is this thing only going to get worse and consume my entire life? If it is I'm even more excited...

Welcome back from Iraq and welcome to BT.  To answer your question; yes, it does get "worse."   I'm sure with the right training all three of those races are perfectly do-able for you.  Check out the training plans on BT - they'll get you off to an excellent start.

Welcome to BT, Gran.  You'll find that most new triathletes would list swimming as their weakest event or the event that they have never done before.  I know that was/is the case with me.  It sounds like you have the motivation to stick with a training plan.  The beginner training plans here at BT are great for people just starting out to get a base level of fitness in all three events.

Your race schedule looks about right.  Use those two sprints in April and June to concentrate on getting comfortable with swimming/biking/running and then step it up to olympic distance training after the Sprint in June and into July and you should be golden.

As far as sonsuming your whole life I think you'll find that after your first race you'll be hooked.  I know I was.

Welcome to BT. I can say this: as you get the itch to do longer tris it gets easier to fit in the time as the kids get older.

Jeff, your schedule is not too ambitious.  You have a running background and have been biking for awhile, doing some sprints then finishing with a late year oly should be very possible.  Of course, now is the time to start working on the swim.  Swimming will take several months for it to 'click.'  I recommend going at least 3x per week to see some good improvement in endurance.  Here is a good swim plan if you need one:

Welcome and good luck.
