Subject: need aero bar advice!
I just added aero bars to my bike(after a professional bike fit) and they are very comfortable to use, but I'm wondering if I still need to gradually get used to the position. I am just biking indoors on a trainer for now because we still have seven foot high snow banks. I have developed evil lower back pain and wonder if it's related.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I'd go back to the person that did the fit and tell them that you have developed "evil lower back pain" since the fitting.  Have them make an adjustment for you.

That is the plan as soon as she returns from her ski trip! Have not been on the bike in a week and the Evil Pain continues....only when sitting however, not when training.

I would guess that the back pain may have been due to the new position. This doesn't mean that the fitting was wrong, just that your body needs to adjust to the new position. It is similar to starting a new training program, you need to ease into it in increments. The fact that the new position feels good tells me the fitting is good, IMO. In my opinion your back is just asking for a break-in period.

Your problem is more than likely SI tendon tightness. It feels like your back but is infact a tendon that connects your spine to your pelvis. It is common amoung office workers, and reponds well to a.i.s and yoga. I've had SI tendon problems that took me completely off the bike, mine still gets sore. However, if I stay out of the chair at work and pratice yoga, my S.I. tendon stays in shape. The key is to rest it when its sore, stay off the bike, and make sure your bike is fitted well to you.

I have been stretching and doing yoga as well as getting ART done. What is a.i.s??

Sitting and driving is the worst! Have tried sitting on a swiss ball while at the computer and back support when driving but can't find any comfortable positions! Luckily I don't have a job that requires sitting and have no pain when I train.

I am staying off my bike for now, but if it is an S.I problem is running OK?

Thanks,
Helen
