Eugene Marathon
55F / 13C
Sunny
Total Time = 4h 29m 37s
Overall Rank = 1178/1742
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 111/134
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4AM for Oatmeal and coffee. At 5:45 I started sipping some Infinite drink. I just relaxed until time to dress.
Event warmup:

I jogged about five blocks to the starting area. It was windy and cold pre-start. I used the portable and then made my way to the starting area with about 20 minutes to spare. I stretched and moved around to stay warm. They called all the runners to the starting area and before I knew it they ran ribbons across the street to group specific pace per mile runners together. I found myself in with the elite runners right up front.
Run

Comments:

Around mile seven I developed a hot spot that stuck with me until the end. I also had a pain on the inside area of my left knee. A few times it felt as though it wanted to buckle.
I ran the race as a test in two areas. Number one- To assess my running fitness for IMCDA. I'm happy overall except for the knee.
Number Two- I wanted to test the INFINITE electrolite drink in preparation for IMCDA. I carried it dry and when I got to a water station I too a sip, tapped in some powdered drink, and sswallowed. My doses weren't consistent but I wanted to test whether I could use only the drink mix. I'm plesed overall and for IMCDA I will use it exclusively. On the bike I'll have it premixed for consumption and will carry it dry for the Marathon portion. It has all the carbs, calories, protien, and electro's I need. That means no gels, bars, and multiple energy sources. I will drink the warm chicken broth on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Another long run or two would have helped. AS it was I managed two 17 mile training runs prior to the race.
Post race
Warm down:

I walked through the recovery area to look for snacks. Someone from Gleukos gave me an empty box and I started filling with goodies it for later. I sat down twice and massaged my very achey calves. At the pre-race expo I bought "The Stick" for rolling out knots and for myofascial relief. I works wonderfully.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My left knee would be the main culprit here. Not sure where the pain came from and I never felt even a twinge while training. Just one of those things I suppose.

Event comments:

One step closer to IMCDA!

Nice work out there!

Excellant to see that infinite will work for you for IMCDA on the run mixing on the fly. The Infinite guy at IMLP last year suggest to mix it up in a slurry like gel consistency and put it in a gel container and add that into water on the fly to get more accurate dosing..just an idea.

Hope you get the knee thing workedout.

I'd say your run fitness is spot on for your IM

Congrats~
