Subject: I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING
Okay... I'm at least able to type now! My name is Adrienne... 36... have two boys (2yrs and 4 months) ... living overseas in Saudi Arabia (I'm American though) and have been wanting to do a triathlon. My mother has been doing the DANSKIN every summer in Denver and this year I'll be home in time for TRI FOR A CURE (August 7th) to benefit cancer research so I thought I'd give it a shot. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING... I printed out a 6 month training schedule off this site and I guess that's where I'll start. (I also want to lose 25 pounds to be back to pre-pregnancy weight- I gained 60 pounds with my pregnancy! blech!) There is a really good amateur running group here so that should help with the running aspect of things. Should I try to run/bike/swim the distances now and get a "time" so I can see the progress? Is that how you start? P.S. I *love* the random quotations that come up on this site!

Welcome aboard. And ya' know what? A lot of us here didn't have a clue either. But, we asked plenty of questions, made new friends, learned a great and crossed our finish lines in our own way. Congratulations on your decision to do a triathlon and good luck with your training. I wouldn't worry about any kind of baseline numbers at this point, just follow your training plan and ask a bunch of questions along the way. Since this is your first triathlon, my recommendation would be to just do it to finish and enjoy the journey to the starting line. However, if you're exceptionally competitive, that may not cut it for you

Starting with one of the plans on this site is what I would tell you, and you've already done that, so you must kind of know what you're doing

Seriously though, the sprint distance training plans are meant to build up your distances gradually to race day - start with the minutes outlined by the plan and just get going.  No worries if you can't complete the distances right now - you have 6 months to train! 

Also, the Danskin and Tri for the Cure are known to be really good races for first-timers.  The all women's atmsphere is great - I did the Danskin last year and was so amazed at how encouraging everyone was on the course.

good luck adrienne...that plan should treat you well...dont focus on the weightloss....focus on slowly and conservatively building endurance and watching your diet...then the weight will come off without worrying about it.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their quick WELCOME! It will be nice to *start* the training (that's probably important isn't it!) and then be able to ask questions here on this site! The internet is AMAZING! It was great, last night I was registering for the TRI that I'm doing here in Saudi (I'm here, not the TRI) and my mom was on the same site chattering on about how great it was going to be to do this together! The internet is an amazing thing! Thanks again - makes me realize it's not a black hole out there.
