Subject: New Cassette Questions?

I am looking at getting a new cassette.  I have a 12 x 23 Campy.  If I buy a 12 x 25 or a 13 x 26 will I need to get a new chain?

Also, the cassettes don't come with a lock ring, will the one on the cassette I already have work with the new one?

1 more question, where does the Campy Mirage cassette fit into the lineup?  Below the Veloce?  Is it still compatible with the Veloce groupset?

Thanks,

Chris

Usually it is a good idea to change your chain with your cassette.  How many miles on your chain?

Usually the cassettes do come with a lock ring.  But if it does not, then yes, you can use your old one (assuming you have Campy ones for both).

Campagnolo road groups in decending order: Super Record (new for 2009), Record, Chorus, Centaur, Veloce, Mirage, Xenon.  Yes, the Mirage should be compatible with the Veloce (assuming both 10 speed).

Note that if you drop to an 11-XX you will need a new lockring.

11t = http://www.excelsports.com/new.asp?page=8&description=Lockring+11t&...

12 and 13t = http://www.excelsports.com/new.asp?page=8&description=Lockring+12%2...

Note that these are listed for Chorus and Record. From your post, I'm assuming you're asking about Veloce? So I might be FOS or not answering your specific question.

Rick's probably right and it looks like you're not dropping to an 11t inner sprocket.

Campy cassettes with an 11 tooth cog usually come with a lockring. Campy cassettes that have a 12 or 13 as the smallest cog usually do not, however you can use the lock ring on your your current cassette for these cassettes.

All the Campy cassettes or all levels are compatible with all the various Campy groups so long as they are the right speed (9 speed vs 10 speed, etc.). Mirage is the lowest level, but is not substantially different from the Veloce cassettes. The only difference is that the Veloce cassette has a nickel plating that makes it shinier and possibly adds some wear protection.

You probably won't need to change out the chain because of the chain length difference. Going from a 12x23 to a 12x25 or 13x 26 is not a very big change, but if the chain is worn you will want to change it out just to prevent excessie wear on the cassette. Just measure the chain for wear.

Anytime you change 'gears' check your chain length. If you are unsure how, here is a link. Look halfway down the page to chain length.
