Subject: RE: 9/20/08 Lake Chatuge Beast of the East! Training RideWell, I did the training ride by myself today and man was it hot! http://www.thebeastoftheeast.net/images/Maps%20Half%20IM%20Bike%20Full%20Route.JPG This is the map I used to follow, to make the drive shorter I parked my car off of 64 and started at mile marker 28.23. From here to the R on East Vineyard there was a good head wind to compete with today (about 5 miles). Ride back from marker 33-38 is very fast with one minor climb. It is a pretty uneventful ride as you can the elevation change the last half of the ride (my first half) is just minor up/down, roads are very nice with the exception of some spots, pretty windy in the open spots (which there are a lot of) and very hot. On the map at mile 9.7 - it says the Beast Begins, well, it kind of does, there is a minor climb, not much to worry about then it gets steeper but pretty short when you see the Mansion (beautiful house to your R). Once at top, the descent is pretty shaky with rough road and first R you can take w/ out braking but there is A LOT of lose gravel/sand there so BE CAREFUL. Other than that it was a very fun ride. The hardest part is from 9.7 (beast begins) to 26.33 (highest pt. on course) and this is the first 1/2 of the race, I did it the last 1/2. The course is very well marked with plenty of white arrors and bikes on the road showing you where to go. My only concern was JackRabbit, I did the little loop but they had covered up the arrorws pointing to go R onto that road, so maybe that will not be apart of the race. I am curious, who all is doing this race? and if you are, let me know if you plan to wear a wetsuit, I do not have one so I've been planning on swimming in tri shorts. Any questions email me or PM, I will see you all Sat. the 20th. Edited by teckert 2008-09-04 8:07 PM
