Subject: QUESTION ABOUT MAX HEART RATE

Until just now I've never really paid attention to my heart rate.  The treadmill says that for my age (38) my 80% max should only be 144.  I'm the type to turn beet red when running and have noticed looks on occasion.  A friend told me I should watch it and never go over the maximum.

If I take 220-38 my Maximum Heart Rate is 182
Then I was told to use this formula to calculate target zone:
Target Heart Rate = Maximum Heart Rate X ( 55% - 90%)

So my 90% heart rate should not exceed 164
Today when I ran at a slower than normal pace... I fluctuated between 170-180 !!!   I had to keep walking to bring it down again but sure enough... start running and it spikes up again.  But I didn't feel exhausted, tired or in pain or anything.  I normally run faster and harder.

So my question is - how do you work towards bringing your heart rate into a safer zone?  And should I be concerned that it's that high?  (Wouldn't want to drop dead on treadmill!  The embarrassment ha ha).   Any comments / suggestions would be much appreciated.  Thanks

Someone will post the link to Mike Ricci's thread

It's a good read that should help you answer your question.  Good luck!

Tyler,

Yes, but if you don't have access to the equipment. Then it is fairly accurate on most people, but can vary by like 10-20 beats.

It proved to be accurate when I did a run VO2 Max test last year.

MaxHR and especially the 220-age formula are basically worthless.

Someone will post the link to Mike Ricci's thread, but basically what you need to do is a field test on your own to establish your HR zones.  Or for a few $$$ you can do this with a blood lactate test.

Have you read the thread?  I'm not sure how you can read that and still say 220 - age is ok to use.
