Subject: Brakes off line after putting wheel back on

I gave my bike a bit of love and cleanin' today but after putting the wheels back on both the front and back brakes were full on touching one side of the wheel. I had to adjust the alignment of them majorly to get them to the right place.

What causes this - something to do with the quick release? And how do I stop it happening? Wouldn't like to change a puncture and have a long ride home like this.

Thanks

Did you double check that your wheel is in the dropouts correctly?  If they are, just recenter your calipers.  they move sometimes if your not careful.

As stated, make sure the wheel is seated in the dropouts fully, and if that is the case, then use either a cone wrench or an offset wrench to re-center the brakes. Not a huge deal. On my Scott Waimea, I have to center the brakes before every ride.

Yeah I recentred so that was no problem here at home but if it happened out on the road would be different story.

I've had the wheels off a dozen times (punctures and cleaning) in the last few months since I got the bike but never had this problem before. Might start carying more tools with me.

When I notice my brakes are not centered properly, I just grab the whole brake assembly with my hand and turn it until it is centered (after checking that the wheel is seated correctly, etc).  No tools required, just a little bit of muscle.

I'm don't think the brakes moved. I get the idea it's actually where the wheel is positioned between the dropouts because I've also had gears slipping since I did this (back durailler not lining up with casette?).

Might be time to pay a visit to the friend bike shop.
