This is my first winter in training and am going to kelowna for the next two months and need to know what kind of clothing you guys wear running in the cold and dark? I'm going by myself and don't know anyone up there to ask.

Be prepared for an average of 5 deg. colder than what you're used to for the most part. On the other hand you can look forward to 75% less rain.

Temps will quite often dip below 0 over night but  then rise slightly above 0 for the day.

Also because of the valley situation there's usually nasty wind coming from the north or south.

Mind you down here in the southern part of the valley we continue to cut our grass and swim the lakes year round.

a) If you dress for the temperature when you leave for your run, you will be much too warm by the time you finish.  I prefer to go in between - I'm a bit cold at the beginning and a bit too warm at the end.

b) Layering helps to stay warm.  I like to wear a good base layer (long sleeve) + normal running shirt over top in this weather and then when it gets colder, I might add a hoodie into the mix, or something along those lines.  Also, when it gets really cold, I'll add a "Under Armor" style of base layer - thicker, tighter long sleeve.  Cozy.

c) I like a "tech" toque because I get too hot in a regular toque but not having anything leaves my ears to freeze.

d) Gloves - just a pair of ordinary fleece gloves that are cheap work great for me when it's real cold.  I tend to use actual running gloves when it's chilly, but not cold, because the ones I have have a sweat wiping thing on them that's handy (pun intended! haha).

e) I will often wear two pairs of socks - one thin tech sock (cycling style) and then a slightly thicker cotton sock.  Not too much to make my runners too snug, but enough to keep my frozen feet warm.  My feet get cold pretty easily (as do my hands), so I like to be sure that I'm warm enough.

Go check out Fresh Air Experience on Harvey (over near Wendy's/Arby's...across Harvey from Future Shop).  They're, in my opinion (although I haven't lived in Kelowna in awhile), the best running store in town.

I agree with everything that's been said. Big thing is the ice on the roads. You have to be careful running. I sometimes wear my hiking boots in the winter because they have more traction but you may have better shoes. Kelowna's not all that windy except by the lake. Last winter I ran in temps as cold as -15 without any trouble. I sometimes wore a scarf across my mouth to warm the air as I breathed in.

However, I just re-read your post. If you're only here for 2 months, and coming in November/December, the temps won't be as cold. The snow usually starts to fly a bit around the end of November but it doesn't always stay, especially in the valley bottom.

Thanks everyone. Useful info. I'll definatly check out Fresh Air Experience. The only place I know of is the Running Room up there. Does Fresh Air Experience have running groups?
