Subject: How will you perform when you hit your target weight

I posted this in the Clydesdale/Athena forum but I think I should have posted it here.

Let me start by saying that I am a math loving uber-geek. I like to know the unknown and so on.

I recently competed in my first triathlon which was the New Orleans HIM. Now, I weighed about 265 when I ran the tri. It took me 8 hours to do it.  The winner ran it in about 4 hours or something ridiculous like that.

All of this got me to thinking, how fast would the winner have run it if he were my weight. Conversely I wanted to know how fast I would be if I were running the race at his weight.
This spreadsheet assumes a couple of things and it is very simple. It is based off of power and it assumes that your power will be consistant across you weight. While it might not be true for the pro it will probably be true for me.

I just figured that I was very fit and really good at running a tri at 265 and wanted to compare my "performance" with the skinny folks.  Here is my spreadsheet you can use it if you like. It was an eyeopener for me and has caused me to get serious about my weightloss.

If you can think of any improvements or if you don't understand it and need clarification please let me know.

A lot more of your time will be based on your training vs weightloss. In running 1lbs is roughly equivalent to 1min decrease in your open marathon time. YMMV. There are bigger guys that are fast. However if you do have 100lbs to lose or whatever your goal is, everything will be much easier.

That is the beauty of this. You don't have to predict, it does it for you.

You have to make the assumption that you will be in as good shape when you get to your target weight as you are now.  If you are then the numbers from a sheer physics standpoint are sound.

It's a conservation of energy thing. It takes X amount of energy to move your body at your current weight. If X amount of energy is used on your next race and you are lighter it should carry you faster. Simple physics.
