Wondering if anyone has any suggestions, besides gels or other simple sugars, of something that has worked for them, without turning your stomach in knots, at the HIM to IM distance?

I did IMWI back in '06 and had no problems stomaching 10 gels on the bike course, and a few on the run course as well.

In training for the Chicago mary last year I struggled, at times, with bloating and cramping from any gel I put down my gullet.

Out on a long ride today I had 5 gels mixed w/water in a gel flask.....every shot I took disagreed with the system. I had a sleeve of Shot Blox with me, too, so i tried those......yeah, that's not going to work, either.

Does anybody out there use something more "solid" in their training than the simple stuff that works well for you and doesn't turn your system upside down even when racing hard? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would think you would want to try more liquid as opposed to more solid food, such as infinit or CarboPro or Hammer.

I use a combination of gels and Cliff bars on longer training rides.  The solid food from the Cliff bar does tend to settle my stomach a bit, and it provides a nice break from the gels.  Not sure why, but it works for me.

I think I get what I need from liquid calories through Gatorade Endurance. It's not my first choice, but it's what is offered at the majority of races that I do so I train with it.

Maybe you're right, but the thought of throwing in some solid food, at the very least, doesn't make my stomach turn like the thought of something "soft".

Sometimes I use fig newtons and powerbars on my long rides. I cut the powerbars into little pieces and sprinkle them with ground flax to get rid of the stickiness. I try to eat one or two every 20min. or so. So far, they've worked really well for me! I used to (and still do on short rides) eat Sportbeans, but sometimes, like you said, something a little more "solid" is what you need. Hope this helps!

OK, this may sound weird-Oreos. I know, its crap. But I have used them before with success on long training runs for marathons.
Also, peanut butter crackers-on saltines. Salt you need, easy to eat. Need water to get it down.
