Subject: Training all three disciplines

I'm really loving it!

I've always been an active person with a large build. 5' 11 1/2 200+. Currently I'm about 295.

I've never actually trained two disciplines at once except a little bit of weight training with my running, but even so, it was more on the running than the strength training. That always got shelved if I was feeling beat. Even in school, when I was doing track, football, rugby and tennis, it didn't really feel like we were training any particular area, accept for maybe running for fitness and a few drill to develop hand - eye or hand - foot coordination.

I've only been training for a week (today was the first day of the second week) and I'm not even on a hard plan. I'm doing Michael Pate's 22 week couch to sprint program and I'm finding it very easy to follow. I don't know if I should be but, I'm doing all workouts on days as bricks. Why? Because I can. I find it easier as I have the time in the early morning and the initial distances are just so short and easy. I'm only struggling with the swim but that seems to be the norm with 99% of people on this forum.

It's a new mindset to get out the pool and jump straight on a treadmill or a bike but after the first couple times, it seems to get a lot more easier and a lot more enjoyable. I think the only benefit of doing both workouts of the day as a brick will give me an edge come race day. I'm sure I would find it a lot more difficult if I had to swim a mile and run 10 miles but for the moment, I'm enjoying the ride.

 Happy Tri'ing

Big T

Doing all your workouts as bricks will benefit you in the beginning. As you improve and your workouts get longer then you may need to split them up or may not. A tri is an endurance event and doing bricks is endurance training. Just be careful to increase your time and distances a little at a time to avoid injury and allow yourself plenty of recovery. Don't forget samrt nutrition and hydration during your lengthy training sessions.

Way to go!!

Thanks guys.

I know how important it is to hydrate, feed and rest well. I ran the Dubai marathon in January this year. My time was nothing to be proud of but I could have done better if I had the means to get my hands on some Gu. At the time, I didn't think of using my head and getting some sweets or sugar to take with me instead. Dubai isn't really a place athletes can get their hands on gels and stuff.

Dude, you ran a marathon - that is always something to be proud of!!

as for bricks... do a search and ask around.  IMO a brick once a week/ every 2 weeks can help, but doing them regularly or as the bulk of your workouts isn't a good idea.
