I don't own a wetsuit, but will need one for a race in October

From following the discussions on this board, it seems like long sleeve is the way to go.

I'm thinking of renting one for an open water swim coming up. That swim however, is in the middle of July (early morning) in North Carolina. If I rent a long sleeve, am I going to bake?

My better sense says to get long sleeve since that's what I'll use in October. AND again, from the discussions here, it seems like if you're going to buy one, buying long sleeve and wear it whenever you can (I'm not racing for a podium spot) seems to be the common recommendation. I'm just worried about overheating - is this a valid concern?

It seems a little useless to rent a short sleeve just to try out when I'll actually be racing with a long sleeve.

This swim in July is an organized event, and will probably be my last chance to actually try one in open water before October.

Any thoughts from anyone???

If the water temps are very warm, you might.  But I wear mine in an indoor pool kept in the low-80s.  Just have to be careful about how long and/or how hard I am swimming.  It's very warm, but not dangerously so from what I can tell.  I would go with the full and just adjust your time/effort in it if the water is very warm that day.  Although, since this is an organized event you want to check if they have any wetsuit resrictions of their own for the day.

If overheating is your only concern, then I personally would go long sleeve. I've owned both and raced both here in Texas. Didn't notice much difference. There is not a bunch of heat that escapes from your arms, so if you overheat it's more a factor of having your torso wrapped with rubber than your forearms.

My solution to overheating is the same with both sleeve or no sleeve. While swimming, dip/raise/throw your head in a direction that gaps the wetsuit on your neck and lets water in. It takes 2 tenths of a second and will fill your wetsuit with cool water. Repeat as needed. Problem solved.

If you find that you can't stand the restrictive nature in the shoulders, then think about a sleeveless or a different brand.

x2. Great advice here.

I've raced in both sleeveless and long sleeve and I tend to prefer the long sleeve. If the water is really that warm, you'll likely get hot either way.

I swam in a pool once when the water temp was 79-80. It got a little hot, so I just pulled the wetsuit back from my neck/chest and let some water in. That helped.
