Subject: Ive lost my desire to run.

I am a former Football and Hockey player, Triathlete and Soldier and I have lost my desire to run. I know. Say it aint so. What can I say, I just dont have the motivation to go.

I say former, because in 2005 I broke my left big toe AND in 2007 I broke my right ankle and ligaments and tendons. I did that one right. It took me almost a year to recover from 7 months of misdiagnosis. And just when I started to get back in the grove of a steady, but not strenuous workout the left ankle injury hit. The left ankle took me almost a year to get back in shape. Physical therapy, surgeries, all that good stuff.

So in two years I went from a competative amature athlete to a former athlete. I had gained 20 or so pounds and went from a bmi of 18 to 20. I have since retired from the military and havent gotten back into athletics. I have always ran and ridden alone and I live far from others so having a partner isnt possible.

I need help but I JUST CANT GET MOVING!Undecided

ADVICE???

I so know what your talking about.  I am a former athlete, I played basketball, volleyball, and softabll.  I played pro basketball and I injuried my knee and took the steam out of my training.  I took some time off and started a family.  Now..2 kids later and 30 pounds.  I decided that I am going to do something for myself.  So I have signed up for my first Triathlon.  I figured I won't be bored with just running.  I did enought that in per- season for basketball many years.  I am finding swimming in so much harder than running, and less impact on my body.  So far in 2 weeks I have loss weight and my motivation is not only the scale but I am see a result in my focus in my personal life as well as my training. Good Luck I hope this helps.

I know this probably doesn't help, but my new motto has been "just do it"!  I am training for IMLouisville and i work full time and have a 11 month old baby.  Everytime i don't want to i just bear down and tell myself to "just do it"! Also, being someone who had run for years and had times where i just didn't want to do it (the reason i started tri's").....You just have to be consistant.  I've run for years and when i take more than a month off it takes me a good 3 weeks before i feel good while i run.  So i would say to make yourself run 3 times a week for 3-4 weeks and if you still don't like it then you might try something else for a while.  But just starting up again ALWAYS sucks and takes a while to get back in the groove.

I used to be very active in triathlons up until 2000 when I tore my ACL.  Immediatley after surgery I moved to a new communtiy 3 hours away.  Between the injury and losing all of my training partners, I lost all desire to train.  It wasn't until a cycling club formed in my area in 2008 that I got my mojo back.  A big part of the training for me is the social aspect.  So........ my advice might be to find someone to train with, friend, club, etc.  Or try to start a club in your area.

I think I will!  You all have been so helpful. Maybe I do need to be around other athletes. I dont feel like my life has been as full (although I love my family) since the injuries and I have not been in the social networking groups that I was in the past, so maybe you have a point.

Today I ran a mile.  Not much but was it ever exciting.  At first it sucked and I had to push, push, push.  But, as I made my half mile turn (First run EVER since the injuries) I wanted to keep going. I didnt want to stop!

Its good to feel that again. and I look forward to feeling it more!  The lungs are there but the legs are a bit wobbly! LOL!
