Subject: HIM in Lake Norman?
I'm trying to find a half Ironman distance race around the Lake Norman area.  I went to high school out there and now live in Colorado.  I've been training for a local HIM out here and have apparently motivated an old friend to do one next year that lives in NC.  I told him I'll fly out and do it with him, but can't seem to find one in Lake Norman.  I've come across the Duke Liver Center in Raleigh and the White Lake Half, but was hoping there would be something closer to the northern side of Charlotte.  Considering the size and temperature of Lake Norman, it's just hard to believe no hosts one there.

Anyone have any suggestions?  The closer to the Mooresville, Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville area that better.

I live in Davidson and I can say you have named the closest half iron distance events already.  White Lake would probably be the shortest drive at a couple of hours.  I haven't raced that venue, but I hear glowing reports about the courses for the sprint and the half, especially about the lake.  The bike and run courses are pretty flat too.  If you want a branded Ironman race, you will need to go to Augusta for that.  Augusta will be about a three hour drive, though.

You can also check out the fsseries website to see what they are offering although I haven't ever done a race run by this group.  I have heard they are well run though.  I don't know if they have any half iron distance events, but they do have some Olympic distance tris and duathlons.

When I first saw your post, I got excited because I thought a half iron distance event was being planned or considered!  It got me to thinking, it would be pretty easy since we have the water for it and I ride the roads that would be available for the ride every weekend.  They are heavily travelled by cyclists.  The only hangup there MIGHT be is laying out a half marathon.  I think the local Y would be a good venue and they already host the most popular sprint event around here.

Damn...got me excited for a second!

I agree that it is kinda crazy that Charlotte has three great lakes and only three sprint triathlons  (two of the three are two day events with all of them selling out).

I really wish there was an Olympic or HIM around the immediate Charlotte area.

Thanks for the info Greg.  I wasn't into tris when I lived there, but I used to run tons of 5ks, 8ks, etc.  I ran a lot of races at the Cornelius YMCA (the Jingle Bell 5k used to be held there, always a cold one).  I am surprised that I couldn't find anything for the area, I thought with the cycling that goes on there, the abundance of running races and easy access to such a large warm lake it would be one of the ideal places to host tris.  There has to be enough people to draw on from Charlotte to justify a race, Charlotte is bigger than Denver and we have tons of tris... and we don't even have lakes, just small reservoirs.

I would say that Augusta is closest, Duke half second and White Lake is nearly four hours from here.  At those distances is less the drive time and more of what sort of race you want.

When and where did you go to school here?  I'm north meck '92.

I never even considered that a race outside of the state would be closer   I guess that's what happens when you're surrounded by states that don't have much in them.... Kansas, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico

I'll looking into the Augusta one as the Duke as a backup, the date might be the deciding factor since I have to give my friend enough time to train and don't want to stack a half too close to my full.
