Subject: Tri Relay Question
Does a tri relay consist of 3 people each doing one leg of the tri?  I am new to tri's and have done 1 and will be doing another this weekend but my wife and sister would like to participate as well.  How do the transitions work?  What do I need to know to make this happen.

never done one...BUT from what i have seen in the Nautica series, which has alot of celeberty relay teams.  it consists of 3 people

swimmer
biker
runner

as they enter the transition they have to change the chip to the next person, they put it on and go....

Or ... 2 people can relay - say you can't swim but want to do the bike and run, or you can't run but want to do the swim and bike, or can't bike but want to do the swim and run ... and so on.

Some races the folks doing bike and run wait at transition spot and you exchange the chip. Other races have a pen that the folks waiting to bike or run wait in and they hand off the chip there.

I love doing relays as long as I get to bike

I did a HIM and IM relay last year and did a HIM and sprint (with my 14 year old daughter) relay this year.

Transitions are a little different in that you do not need to exchange chip or wristband or whatever needs to be passed at your spot on the bike rack. You usually need to find a spot before the race to rack your bike so it is in the transition area before the race starts. When your swimmer comes in they should meet your biker as close to the bike exit as possible. The biker will have unracked their bike and be standing just inside the bike exit of transition. Likewise, when the biker comes back in after their ride the runner should be waiting just inside the bike entry to transition.

Another hint to save time in t1 and t2.  Say you get done with the swim, have the runner stand just inside the t1 gate and take your chip off of you and then they will sprint to the biker and strap it on them.  Then when the bike is done, stand by the t2 gate, take the chip of the biker and run and strap it on the runner.  A little bit of teamwork will save you a little time.
