I just completed my first tri last weekend and when training for the bike I would wear my tri (2xu) shorts.  I never had any comfort issues even on longer rides.  I am planning on doing another sprint in 6 weeks and am wondering if it is worth picking up a pair of cycling shorts or can i just continue to train in my tri shorts.  My main concern is how long the shorts will last before they need replacement.

Wash with cold water, hang to dry, don't wear them in the chlorine, and they'll last a really, really long time.  I've got a pair of Desoto's 2.5 years ago that are just like the day I got them.  I train in them often and wore them in races before we finally got team kits.

Wear them for pool swims (chlorine) and your shorts will be see-through in a couple of months.  I now buy cheap jams for my pool swims.

I agree...however, it's hard to get the smell out of them in cold water.  I wash mine in hot water and dry them in the dryer.  They don't last that long.  Go figure.

To clarify on washing with cold water.  I just put them in the washing machine with the normal loads and normal detergent on cold.  Then I hang them up.  I do that with all my training/racing gear except for socks.  Socks get the dryer treatment, while everything elses hangs.  The only pair of cycling shorts I've lost were because of a crash.  My polyester swimsuits are going on a year and a half of pool swimming (save for this month) and show zero wear.  All my tops are in great condition, too.
