I am signed up for IMLP 2010. Not a strong athlete by any sense of the word, but i got heart. Weakest area, the swim. I am consistently doing 1/2 mile swims in the pool in the 18 -18:30 range. No wetsuit and no fancy turnarounds, 25 meter length.

The question I have is simple. Am I going to die?

Your goal for the winter:

Get some swimming lessons and start swimming more/harder.  Join a Master's swim program if you can.

You have 2:20 for the swim, and you are already swimming at a decent speed.  Have someone look at your stroke (video / coach, etc) and you will be fine!

x2 on the you have decent speed already. Spend time on technique now (coaching, lessons, local tri club, whatever works) and you have lots of time to build endurance before next July.

For a first-timer - the distance is not the big challenge for an IM swim - it is more swimming with little enough effort to have lots of heartbeats left for the rest of the race.

Great news - I just broke 18 minutes for the 1/2 mile for the first time ever. I feel great and accomplished.

As suggested or at a bare minimum get a few lessons and someone to help you get a decent stroke. Swimming is all technique- practice bad form you'll never get better. Another suggestion is to swim intervals instead of distance.
