I am 18 years old and am determined to do well in this year Tri Seasion  (Nov - May in Australia), which is proven by still training, while suffering 4 injuries. I have tendonitis in my right shoulder, a neck injury, growing pains in my knees and inflamed tendons around my ankles. The injuries are manageble and will go away eventually, but volume isn't as high as I would like, but I'm staying optimistic.

The point of this thread is, who is still training, while managing a injury? Also what do you do when the injury gets in the way of a chosen session or race?

Hi Oggi
I'm in Nedlands, I don't really know about injuries in someone your age but will tell you my experiences.  I couldn't run more than 15 mins for over a year - I developed trochonteric bursitis after pregnancy and had to build up my butt muscles to stabilise my pelvis.  Meant I could do a few super sprints - I was quite happy to put up with the pain afterwards and treat it with ice, rest etc as I knew I wasn't doing any further damage.  I think that is the key - I knew I wasn't going to injure it further and with the advice of my physio, could compete (if BOP is competing :-)).  Then, after getting cleats, I managed to injure a lumber disc cycling and that was impossible to compete with as I'd be bedridden in pain.  My physio sorted out my bike fit, gave me exercises to do pre, during and post cycling and it's cleared up.  So a bit of both, some injuries you can train/race with, some you can't.  Are you getting professional advice about this?

Hey
Glad your injuries have gone, but you must've had some tough times. Yeah, I'm am seeing a Physio and he's great. The reason I'm suffering from a lot of injuries is, well actually I don't know. I had a good year last year, suffering no injuries, then this year have done only a fraction of the training as the body started breaking down this year.
Neck injury was caused from swimming, as I breathe always on my right side.
Shoulder Injury was caused by Lateral Raises
Knee Injury is Growing Pains and
Ankle tendons was caused by a sharp increase in Training, just wanted to train so badly, I went stupid and increased to quickly, but I learn from my mistakes and I still get back up.

Just this month

Swimmers Ear - No swimming from Aug 1st to Aug 10th.
Knee Pain - Shut everything down from Aug 7th to 9th
Sickness (Cold) - Cut short my century on the bike and had my worst 5k ever.  Just this weekend.

Just for the curious; 37:09 5k.  In addition to being sick, the gun went off when I was registering, I ran to the start line which was a half mile away, then probably ran a 30:00, I didn't really push it and just had fun.

Still, I do feel good about this month.

Some injuries you can train through (if you're careful); others, it can be foolish to do so.  I've trained through runner's knee (with reduced mileage) and mild Achilles tendonitis.  On the other hand, I shut down for a week and am only just now easing carefully back into training after a bad hamstring pull last month.  Not all injuries are created equal.
