Recommend Races?

What island?  If you're on Oahu, the Tradewind Triathlon posted above is a great event.  It's on a very scenic Marine Corps base with a protected ocean swim and it's dirt cheap compared to what most races cost.

Haven't decided on the islands yet. I'm really looking forward to checking out some nice beaches.

On the Big Island 11/1 a sprint that is free, just show up and race at Kona Pier. S - .3, B - 10, R - 2. Very relaxed and a great bunch of people.

If you go to Maui they will be hosting the Xterra World Championship.  You kinda already need to be registered considering it the world championship however it is still a really fun race to watch.  The tradewind tri is the best bet for Oahu.  It is a really fun course with a nice uphill run.
On the other hand being from BC if you wanna do some mtb riding let me know, i know a few good spots on Oahu
