Subject: Calf Lockup!
I have had it happen twice now. I stop at light on my bike and my right calf muscle locks up on me. It happened in my first tri race. I blamed it on the heat it was 40 degrees Celsius, but the second time it was during my ride home from work. I was well hydrated and the weather was fine, it just coma on hard when I stopped for a traffic light. I had to get off my bike and stretch and could barely walk on the leg. after about 5 minutes of stretching it tapered off enough to get home. Any ideas what can cause this!!Any ideas would be greatthanks

How even is your pedal stroke? Assuming you are using pedals and cycling shoes (spd, speedplay etc...) then it could be something with the positioning of your cleats/pedals. When you are cycling how much do you feel you are using your calf muslces when just cruising? It sounds like they are being used to much or at an odd angle and then when that stops suddenly (You stop and put your foot down) they seize up due to the change.

No expert but that is my best guess.

I know when I first started riding (mtb) and running I was always having calf issues.  One thing I was told was that my seat too high and could be causing me issues.  Didn't really solve my problems, just time in the saddle and running did.

Could be a lot of things with bike fit to muscle weakness issues.

Out of curiosity, what makes you think that you were well hydrated?

There are limits to how quickly your body can absorb water.  And, on a hot day, you are probably losing much more water than you can replace.

Drinking more water than your body can absorb doesn't fix the problem, it just causes other problems.

The Hammer website has a bunch of info on this:

I am going to take a shot and guess that your saddle is too high...
