Subject: Getting ready to start training for first tri!
Hi there!  My name is Debbie and I have been thinking about doing a tri for almost a year now and finally have the guts to start training.
I did my first half marathon in Sept. 09 and tore a tendon in my foot.  I am thinking a tri would be good since it isn't as much running-well a sprint.  I have gotten a training program off of this site and am registering for my sprint tri tomorrow.  I am doing the tour de Kirkwood in St. Louis.
I would love any first time tips as I don't even have a suit yet.  I have a gear for the bike and running stuff, but no pool stuff.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.  I also see there were some mentoring groups, will those start again?

Debbie

Hey welcome aboard. Tearing a tendon doesn't sound like fun but glad you've found tri as an alternative I really like tri because you get to mix up the training.

Although I can't offer any specific suggestions, all you really need for the pool to get started is a good pair of goggles, a suit of your choice, and probably a swim cap. Make sure you get some decent goggles that don't leak, it's really frustrating to swim with leaky goggles and a cap to keep the chlorine out of your hair too much.

Good luck and happy training!

Hi Debbie,
Good Luck.
I started training on Dec. 27 for my first tri coming up in May. The workouts were tough in the beginning but are getting easier now. So my advice is just keep building on each week, each month.

There's something very addictive about training for a tri.

Hi and welcome.
You don't need a specific tri suit (unless you really want one) for your first tri. Try to keep your expenses limited until you decide you love it. Then, believe me, there will be more than enough to spend money on. I did my first tri in my bathing suit!
For pool stuff, if you can try to get a polyester suit. They don't wear out as fast as the lycra ones. Get a couple different pairs of swim goggles so you can see what you like. What feels comfortable at 200m doesn't necessarily feel as good at 700m.

Welcome!  I did my first half marathon last April and this is my first year of tris too.  This is a great site for info.  As for mentor groups, I think they are all full.  You can post here that you are looking for one and a mentor might have an opening or make another spot.  If not, pick a group and read through all the old posts.  Many people have the same questions plus there will be topics that make you think of new questions.

Good Luck!

ETA: and don't be afraid to ask any question.
