Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

No routine yet, it is first Tri.
Event warmup:

10 minute jog, 10 minute swim
Swim
  • 11m 3s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 46s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started out well, reached the first buoy at 100m in front 3rd of group. Got turned and headed to next buoy. Tried to establish a good rythem but didn't sight for about 25-30 strokes and was well off course. Tried desperately to get back into swimming lane, which eventually I did, but used up alot more energy than expected and was very deflated. Noticed the more tired I got, the more my dominant arm stroke took me off course. Very humbling start to my first Triathlon.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder in swimming endurance, clean up form, sight more often and never use a waterskiing wetsuit again. Even though swimming is my weakness, I felt like the wetsuit was very restricting and multiplied energy for each stroke.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Transition included in time.
What would you do differently?:

Transition went fine. Just had to mentally get back into it. Disappointed.
Bike
  • 00m
  • 14 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Started out with a strong pace then decided to pull back a little and go steady pace. Calf tightened up at about 10 miles. 1 tough hill at end of loop which was difficult 2nd time around. Good course.
What would you do differently?:

Train on more hills. I'll try clips before next race. I used my running shoes for this race. Hydrate better during the ride. Ended up cramping in run.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Saved a little time not having to change shoes. Went fine.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 00m
  • 5 kms
  •  min/km
Comments:

Weather was great with a slight breeze. Didn't know we had to loop the park to finish. I had pushed real hard to get to entrance of park thinking I had 200ft left, then seen arrows pointing to path around the park.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe train with more hills. I've mostly trained on flat.
Post race
Warm down:

Hydrated, Stretched

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim took alot more out of me than expected.

Event comments:

I'm glad to have my first Tri over with. I learned alot and know more of what to expect for my next one. Looking forward to it.

Congrats on your first tri!  What did you think of this race?  I might do it next year.

Thanks!!
I thought it was set up well. Transition area only 100+ft from shore. Biking was (2) 7 mile loops, and the streets were controlled in heavy traffic areas. I believe there were 118 participants. I don't have anything to compare with, but nothing negative to say.
Any local "Sprint" distance races that you can recommend highly??

Way to go Triathlete!  The first one is a great learning experience!   You obviously are hooked, if you are looking for another one to do!

Yes I am. I'd like to get 4 or 5 more in this summer. Satsop, Samammish, Flowing lake are tentative plans. Thanks for the encouragement.

Good job on your first tri!  Don't worry so much about the swim, swimming with a "non-swimming" wetsuit is really tough (as you found out) so, it's no wonder you were slower than you wanted to be.  Also, sighting and OW swimming is a lot different than the pool.
