Swim
  • 10m 45s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 09s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was pretty pleased with my swim, I only learnt front crawl 5 months ago and my personal best was 15mins which went down to 12 mins 4 weeks ago.
What would you do differently?:

I stopped a couple of times out of habit rather than because i needed to, i need to train to get out of that habit.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Was quite hard using my usual running trainers and putting socks on, would like to invest in clip ion shoes for the future.
Bike
  • 55m 38s
  • 9 miles
  • 9.71 mile/hr
Comments:

I used a mountain bike and didn't know how to se my gears correctly. On the flat, people were racing past me and it wasn't until a few days after the race i realised that i had another set of gears on the left handle. Also the hill was pretty hard and i didn't get up a good pace, the down hill also needed practice as i was a little nervous about going so fast.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more and know my bike a lot better.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Not much to do here as my shoes were already on, racking was easy.
Run
  • 31m 43s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

I found it very hard to start running and didn't get a pace until about 1 mile into the run. I also had drunk to much of my carb drink previously and ended up with cramp for 2/3rds of the circuit. The uphill was very slow but the down hill i managed to get up a good pace and catch up a little.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not knowing my bike, not being well enough prepared for the run and getting cramp.

Event comments:

Really enjoyed this as my first Triathlon and am now training to do more.

Congratulations on completing your first tri!!!!! That is very very cool! And what a way to start by dropping your swim time several minutes. Very good!

Congratulations Serena!  How's it feel to be a triathlete?  Great picture too.

I have a couple suggestions for your next triathlon.

-Typically for Sprint distance races you don't need to consume calories while racing (ex. sport drink).  This will help you avoid getting an upset stomach.  Make sure you eat and hydrate properly before the race and you shouldn't need anything but water to get you to the finish line.

-Its typical for it to take a mile for your legs to make the adjustment from Bike to Run.  Practice more Bricks (bike to run transitions).

-Get the bike gears mastered and you will FLY!  Ride, ride, ride.  And when you do practice shifting.  Keep a cadence between 85 and 95 RPM and adjust your gears accordingly.

-Fear of going downhill fast?  Keep your weight back over the rear-wheel and keep your fingers over the rear brake lever.  Keep your fingers away from the front brake!

Great job and keep us posted on your progress.

-Michael

I've been cycling in Yorkshire, I bet that hill was far tougher than you make it sound!Congratulations on completing your first triathlon. I hope it's the first of many.

lol, as far as Yorkshire hills go it wasn't one of the worst, but it wasn't one of the easiest either.

Michael, thanx for the great advice Just a question though, how do i find out what cadence I'm actually doing? my bicycle computer only shows my mph...
