Comments: My plan for the race was to take it at a moderately comfortable pace. Maybe 60-70%. I was thinking about 8:50 min/miles. My brother wanted me to run 8m/m but I didn't want to push myself, I don't think I'm fully recovered. Did my warmup and started the race with one of my long sleeve running shirts. Felt comfortable in it during the warmup and contimplated taking it off and leaving it in the car. Decided I didn't want to do that, I could always tie it around my waist if I got hot. Well, I'm a dummy and should have, because as soon as the sun came up I was hot. Standing at the start line I realized I was warm, and I would get hot. 1/4 mile into the race I was burning up! Ugh. Crossed the mass of people to get to the sidewalk, removed iPod, took off shirt, got run over, and threw my shirt in the bushes. Now, to start the race again...mentally this sucked. Kept myself in check for the first mile, got passed by EVERYONE, but I knew better...kept it at about 8:30. By mile 2 and 3 people were thin and I was just picking them off...tisk tisk...I learned my lesson about going to hard once already this year! At mile 1 a bearded guy with long hair came up next to me carrything the American flag. Immediately thought of Aaron, JeepFleeb, and how Aaron's flag is bigger and on a bigger pole. This guys' was not small, but I told him "great job" as he passed me. Felt good, was keeping under an 8:50 pace on my Garmin, was really happy until mile 3. I started noticing my mile notifier on my gps was coming before the timecallers at the races' mile markers. After mile 3 I was really warm, and my legs were getting a little tight around mile 4. I was a little tired but still felt suprisingly good for having minimal sleep the previous 2 nights and probably not enough to eat. Mile 5-passed American flag guy and tons of other people. YES! Pick, Pick, Pick...picked up the pace... What would you do differently?: Not pack for travel/race while buzzed/slighly drunk. I forgot to pack a short sleeve shirt or singlet! This wasted at least 30 seconds. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Jogged with a beer back down the course with my brother to find my mom so we could finish with her. She was so happy, we found her a little before the 6 mile mark--maybe 1/2 before the finish. Don't know if it was the beer or sleep or what, but I got cramps in my calves right before the finish with my mom!! I've NEVER had cramps before! They are Charlie Horses--OMG They hurt so bad!!! I stopped and laughed b/c she left me to finish, I couldn't believe I cramped then..not even in my IM or training, at the end of a 10k with a beer. So, had a couple more beers, talked with Bear, had some really good gumbo and listened to the band. Weather was warm, it was nice. I actually had someone come up and talk to me specifically because of my tattoo! This was kinda funny, but as time goes on I realize what I did just a short time ago...they couldn't believe I did it just 3 weeks ago and felt good today. Waited for the results to be posted b/c I knew I passed a bunch of girls in my AG from miles 3+ and the awards were these awesome mugs and I wanted one... What limited your ability to perform faster: Sleep. Event comments: My final distance on my Garmin was 6.4 miles, which puts my pace at 8.6m/mi. Hum? I was 5th in my AG, and disappointed after seeing that because the 3rd place girl ran 8:40m/mi. That is still a reasonable pace for me and I am a little upset because I didn't run 8-8:30 like I could have. My race would have definitely hurt more, but I would have been third. UGH. However, I think that my gps would have been showing me a faster pace than I needed. Some of my splits were showing 8:30's already, so I would have been hesitant to run 8's. This is frustrating, I think the race is a little off. Needless to say, my brother got a stomach ache, bonked, whatever. Went too hard as usual...laughed at him again. He doesn't understand or have the patience for endurance yet. He's fast, but started out at 7min/miles, finished with an 8:30. Heh. If I think I want to place or have an opportunity to, I need to try more; this is something I need to work on. Overall a good time with my mom and brother and its always nice to meet otehr BTers. Drove 7 hours to the boonies of Garyville, LA. Arrived after 11, went to bed at 12ish. Couldn't sleep, bed uncomfortable, got up at 3. Left the house at 5 with my mom and my brother for the 1.5 hour drive to Lafayette. (Couldn't believe Bear guilted me into this!)
Yes, this might seem far, but Noot wanted to do a race as a family like we used to and I pretty much refuse to get up early and drive to a 5k and this was the only 10k in the area.
Aj stopped at Jack in the Box for a breakfast sandwich, I had a Snickers marathon bar, 1/2 gatorade and 2 bottles of water. We joked and remembered about the first 5k my brother did...he was about 12 or 13 and saw all the donuts and bananas for the FINISH. He stopped at the table before the race and had about 4 or 5 donuts. Again, he was young, I was only 15 or 16, but I knew better than to eat that stuff before a workout! He also didn't know pacing (still doesn't) went 100% for the whole race and puked right before the finish!! That was fun for the car ride, we laughed about that for a while. I think my mom liked the quality time.
My cousin is a student at ULL and had registered us for the race. He met us in the parking lot to give us our race packets and we waited for Bear to arrive from his 12 mile run, only to be followed by 2 more. I ran 2 with him as my warmup, learned last week that I'm needing about 20-30 min. to get warm. Nice chat and run with him and felt pretty good after.
