Pre-race routine:

Nothing in particular.
Event warmup:

Walk, light jog to starting line appr. 1 m away. Stretching.
Run
  • 3h 33m 14s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 08m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Goal time was 3:10 for BQ. Went out "easy", doing the first half in about 1:36:xx. Picked up pace slightly from mile 13. Felt some cramping starting mile 18. At about mile 22, got severe cramping on both calf and hamstrings. Mile 23, groin muscles started to cramp.
What would you do differently?:

Take more salt tablets maybe.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching, walking.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Temperature and humidity. All my training miles in the last 3 mo's have been in 30-50F weather, but the marathon itself was in the 70's with higher humidity.

Event comments:

Even though I didn't hit my goal time, I was very pleased with the race. I felt my body and spirit felt plenty good enough to hit the 3:10, but my cramping just prevented me from doing so. Sara gave me bottles of Endurance Gatorade, which I added extra salt to at mile 11 and 22, drank at water stations throughout the way, but in the end, I think my body just wasn't used to running in 70 something weather and high humidity.

Good run, great time for onolulu, even if you didn't make your goal. I did this race in 2001, and between the heat, the double climb over Diamond head, and the 30mph headwind, I was spent by mile 18.

Nice run. I did it in 1984. Most BT'ers probably were in elementary school! I remember the strong headwind going out.

Great Job! Great Time too! I plan on doing this race in '06. Are you coming back for another attempt at that goal time?

If I'm in Honolulu next year, I'll definitely try another attempt at the goal time. As a precaution, take note of what other BT'ers are saying above. Heat and headwind are killers in this race. I had lived in Hawaii until the last 4 months or so, and I didn't realize how much not training in like conditions would affect race performance. I trained in NYC in very mild weather (30-50's), and light winds. Good luck!
