Subject: Training/nutrition log requests

Hi Ron-

I've got a few selfish personal requests that I'd love to see added to the training logs.  Don't know about the technical difficulty of these so please be gentle if I'm asking you to move a mountain.

  • Add an option to the bike workout data section to designate the particular workout as being done on a trainer.  Here's my reasoning - especially this time of year I do a lot of indoor trainer work where I only use time and HR as my guide.  I would like to differentiate between trainer time and "road" time (when I log distance also) in my monthly and annual totals.  I realize that I could log my trainer time as "stationary bike" under the sports section but then I don't have all the nice options for HR data and such...which is important to me.  What I'm envisioning is a simple check box in the bike section that I can tick if it was a trainer ride and then an additional monthly/annual entry that gives the total trainer time...bike, trainer, run, swim, strength...
  • The ability to add custom exercises in the strength training section.  Several of the things I do in the gym aren't in the current drop-down list and I'd like to add them.  This would probably be best if we could make it specific to each individuals user account so that I can create additional things for myself but others only have to sort through the defaults plus any of their own customs.
  • On a minor related note...can we PLEASE move deadlifts from the leg section to the back section?

I'm just starting to play with the nutrition log and I'm very comfortable with FitDay.com so many of my suggestions here are based on my current comfort with that system.

  • Add a "favorites" section to the nutrition logs for quick access to commonly used foods/meals
  • Add ounces to the options for serving size of meats.  Chicken breast for example only gives the options of 1 cup, 1 unit, .5 breast, or 100g.  I find it much easier to estimate my servings in terms or ounces...4 ounces is 1/4lb, 8 ounces is 1/2lb...and most diets typically outline serving size this way also.  I suppose I could just learn what the conversion for ounces to grams is (1 g ram= 3.527396 ounces) and start working with grams instead...old habits are hard to break.
  • Add logging of fiber to foods.  It's important to eat enough fiber and I like to know how much of my totals carb intake each day is fiber.
  • Add a running total of cals, fat, prot, and carbs to the nutritional log page.  I see that my main training log page has a tally of calories from each but I'd really like to see the amount of each for the day also...x grams of prot, x grams of fat, x grams of carb, x grams of fiber.  I know that using grams here is contrary to what I asked for in the last bullet but I think it is standard to report individual macronutrients in grams.

This would be a big one for me. I hate being a PITA asking for all kinds of exercises added, partly because I change-up my routine on a regular basis, so it would be AWESOME to be able to add my own.

And it seems like it should be simple to do...same concept as the custom meal feature in the nutrition logs.

We hear you on this. The strength section of the training logs is scheduled to be one of the major updates in 2006. The goal is an extremely comprehensive log that would be valuable to anyone doing strength training, not just triathletes.

I'll be happy as long as I can define my own custom selections.

TH3 FRB and Rennick, great responses on the strength and nutrition logs.  Exactly what we are looking for.  We do realize that we need to optimize the nutrition logs more-we just wanted to wait to get plenty of feedback so we can do it right-your inputs helps a lot and we have a running thread at http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=27365&posts=31 .  We plan to optimize nutrition in the coming months.

On the strength, Mike and I have recently discussed our plans for new things for 2006...'Strength Logging' is a basic, core feature that gets used by a lot of people, unfortunately not a lot of 'data' can be graphed or gleamed from it as it is.  Your post and the above reasons are why we are working on the new strength logs during January complete with additional graphs for individual or groups of exercises vs #reps, #sets or weight done over a time period.
