Pre-race routine:

Short run, went back to hotel to change into race gear and was late for the race. Oh well.
Event warmup:

Live band. Handing out registration was well orchestrated and organized.

Comments:

Well if we had been there at the start time, that would have been nice. I got the start ti for this race mixed up with the start time for a race I have in a few weeks. We went back to the hotel to relax a little and put on our race shirts. When we arrived back, the race had started. Color me embarassed! I take full responsibility. We decided that since our goal was to run and raise money for Make a Wish we would race anyhow, even with the 12 minute late start! (!!!!!) We actually came in well before some other people. I based my time on my chronograph.

I actually ran more than the 5k because, realizing I wasn't going to get an official time anyhow, I decided to run back after hitting mile two and join Roy. So I really ran (in my estimation) about 3.6 miles (which matches my regular race pace of about 8.5 min mile). I didn't want him to feel bad. It was a really easy run. I loved it so much, we got up the next morning (today) and ran the same path again.
What would you do differently?:

Actually try getting to the start line ON TIME! What a novel thought!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and grabbed water and an apple. Stretched out, but not enough.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Going back to run with Roy. Disappointment that we had started late when I really wanted to try my best to place in the top half of my age group.

Event comments:

For its first year, the Rock and Roll 4k went really well. I plan to do it again next year. My only complaint is that I don't really like the evening start time. I prefer morning races. There is too big a chance that you'll hit hot weather at 5:30...or that you'll have an idiot racer who thinks the race starts at 6:30.

I applaud your effort to go ahead and start the race after missing the start time.  I don't know that I would have done that.  Now having heard your story, maybe if, and I hope it never happens to me, if I had that happen I could laugh it off and go ahead and run the race.  Great job and to make it fun you go and wait for your partner.

speedlee - 2004-05-24 10:36 PM Great cuase and great attitude on the late start, congrats on a worthwile race.

Thanks! I think every race is worthwhile because I learn a little more about myself and about others each time. I have to say, I've hung around a lot of different "kinds" of people, and I really like runners and triathletes. A nicer group of people you wouldn't want to meet!
