Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:45 am. Showered, ate a bagel, put the bike rack on the truck and drove over to Old Trace Park.
Event warmup:

None. Got on the bike and went... this was primarily a recreational ride and not a race, but I used the opportunity to simulate a tempo ride for the first 25 miles, then dialed it back to an endurance ride.

Comments:

I've been doing this ride each year since 2002. My first attempt at it was successful, on a hybrid, completing 100K. The next year I bonked at 52 miles attempting a 'real' century. In 2004 and 2005, I rode the entire 100 miles. Its not a particularly challenging course in that it is mostly flat, but nearly all of the pavement from miles 30-70 is a very rough and uneven from hell chipseal, that will rob you of between .5 and 1.0 miles off of your average speed, in addition to making it feel like a giant popsicle stick is being jammed up your butt while you're riding on it.

This year, the weather was ideal, the coolest its been since the first time I rode it. I decided to ride the 100K to guage my fitness level for the upcoming Heatwave Triathlon in June. I treated the first 25 miles like a race in that I rode at a brisk tempo, but I didn't push it to the wall as I wanted enough gas to go the whole 100K. Average according to my computer was 18.6 for those first 25.
What would you do differently?:

Buy a state of the art tri-bike and crush the entire field like a grape ;)
Post race
Warm down:

Hopped off the bike and ralphed my guts out. Seriously, I hopped off the bike, went inside and ate a whole bunch of chicken parmesan and drank unsweet tea until it started coming out of my ears.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really, I just treated this mostly as a training ride, rather than a puke your guts out hammerfest. :)

Event comments:

There seemed to be a lot more women and wheelchair riders on this ride than in past years. Didn't see nearly the number of racers using it as a training ride as in the past. Its a good ride for cyclists of all ability levels.

Oh, and because I got there to unload my bike as they were doing the mass start, I got to drop a LOT of people. That was fun! :)

Hey great job!

I did this back in 2003, I think, and it is still one of the best organized and memorable centuries I've done. This was the first time I realized I could hang with the big boys, at least for the first 70 miles, at a 22 mph average. Also the first time I went 50 miles without a stop, as we rode in a paceline all the way to the turnaround.

I remember the road surface changing too, and 0.5 to 1.0 mph difference might be conservative.

Great ride Scott.  Can't wait to do one of these!  Way to go on the average speed!

Nice ride.  Makes the 13 miles i did this weekend seem like nothing.  The rough road sounds like a good argument for big fat tires and a suspension.
