I broke down and bought a new laptop, a Sony Vaio Z series. It is amazing and replaces a 1.5 year old Dell that has been nothing but a headache.

For the computer geeks out there:

2.1/3.1ghz quad core processor (3rd gen Intel)

8gb RAM

13" 1920 x 1080 HD LED display

256gb SSD drive (2x128gb in raid 0 config)

black carbon fiber case

And what is most amazing of all: 2.8lbs. No more lugging a brick!!!

It is possibly the best laptop I've owned. It's screaming fast, doesn't get hot, and you really can't hear the fan. Plus it looks nice and at 2.8lbs it redefines portable.

My son used it yesterday to do software development and loved it. I tested the graphics doing some molecular modeling and it didn't stutter. No problems driving a 24" monitor at the same time.

To pick nits, there are a couple issues with the computer. First, I should have ordered the fresh start version. Sony preloads more crapware on here than real software. Second, the speakers are mediocre at best. Although they do compensate by giving you a free pair of noise-cancelling headphones. Third, the trackpad takes a little getting used to and the default settings needed to be changed.

$1891 with the educational discount. Basically I used my alumni ID and nobody cares, especially if you order online. There is a promotion, 8% discount, $250 off a PS3, PS Vita, or $200 worth of accessories. I took the free PS3 and figure I'll sell it on craigslist for around $200.

Battery seems good, 4+ hours under normal use. Probably better if I tweaked everything.
