Subject: Road bike w/ cowhorn bars & bar-end shifters??

I just go the August issue of Triathlete and I checked out the "bike of the month".  This month it is an Argon 18 Krupton, a road bike.  The article mentions that "you'll find solid handling with cowhorn bars and bar-end shifters, as (Samantha) McGlone has on her bike."

Being a newbie I am thinking, with the slack seat post angle wouldn't this stretch you out too far??   Is it possible to go with this set up and still get a good fit from a LBS that knows how to fit you?  Do others do this?  I am familiar with the use of clip-on jammers and drop bars on a road bike, but cowhorn bars and bar-end shifters?

Would this kind of set-up work for HIM and IM distance races?

Ok..enough questions.

Back in the day... Most of us rode on standard (and even slack by today's standards) road configurations with all kinds of strange handlebar set-ups. I've ridden just what they mention -- cowhorn bars with bar end shifters. It's not too bad of a way to go, BUT... You still need the clip-ons for a real aero position. Does it stretch you out too much? Only if you don't compensate with a shorter stem. Or by throwing that saddle as far forward as it will go. But the cowhorns shouldn't put you in anything more stretched out that a drops position.

I wouldn't do this myself though. Not now.

I actually built my tri bike this way (road frame with cowhorns/bar end shifters). The road frame has a 74 degree seat tube angle, I used a short stem and slid the seat forward a little. So far the fit has been fine and I am not stretched out or crunched up. The fit or position on the bike is not as aggressive as the tt/tri geometry, but it is still aero and more importantly comfortable for me.  If I had more $$ I might upgrade the frame to a tt/tri geometry, but that is atleast a couple years away.

has anyone ever tried combining standard handlebars (drops and brake levers) with clip ons with bar end shifters?

it would be nice to have the drops for descents, the hoods for climbing and the aerobars for flats/rollers. i've never really liked cowhorns, and i don't think the standard handlebars would be much heavier or much less aerdynamic.

i think i would like this set up, but it would be a lot of work/money to try it out and not like it.

The problem with what you described - standard handlerbars with aero bars with bar end shifters. comes down to this question:

What do you do with your shifters on your drops? Remove them? You cant have both shifters on your bar ends AND on your hoods, and if you could manage it, I would love to know how you would rig the cables so that both sets of shiters could independently shift the derailleurs.

You could, theoretically, replace your integrated shifter/ brake levers and replace them with just brake levers on the drops.

i don't thik you could have both. you would have to replace the shift/brake levers with brake levers:

it would either be the best of both worlds or the worst. i can't decide.
