The first thing that comes to mind is that you may need to install java again.

If that isn't the case, can you tell us where the symbols and icons with the problem are? Which pages and locations on the page?

This is just a guess on my part, Mdaddy may have better info, but try this: (or do a 'ctrl+F5' to force a reload of the page to see if it helps a specific page)

If you use Internet Explorer, go to 'Tools' then 'Internet Options' and under the 'general' tab you will see 'delete cookies' and 'delete temporary files'

Make sure you also have under the 'Temporary files' settings, that your browser checks for new versions of stored pages automatically.

Hmm. Can you see any images? Does the problem occur with other sites?

The IE View Images setting wouldn't cause these to show as X's, so I'm leaning towards either your cache needs to be flushed like Ron described, or you may possibly be infected with some type of malware.
